The United States decided their defense again the threat of Soviet communism would be containment, which is a policy to prevent the influence of communism. American officials developed more atomic weapons which began an "arms race." The Soviets were developing their own atomic bomb, which cause the United States to make an even bigger atomic bomb. This was very threatening because the bombs were so powerful, which caused Americans to build bomb shelters to protect themselves. The cold war also extended to space because the Soviets launched Sputnik, so the U.S. later launched the Explorer I. The cold war lasted about 45 years until the Soviet Union fell apart when the Berlin Wall was destroyed.
