The demand for portable units has increased, with handheld devices like smartphones and PC peripherals such as PC Cards or USB dongles being popular choices. Laptops with built-in Wi-Fi services are also in high demand. Additionally, operators are focusing on consumer electronics devices like gaming consoles, MP3 players, and similar gadgets.

However, this list does not include all the devices available because certified modules are integrated into laptops, MIDS (Mobile Internet Devices), and other privately labeled devices. WiMAX gateways, provided by various manufacturers like ZyXEL, Motorola, and Greenpacket, are available in both indoor and outdoor versions. Many of these gateways are standalone self-install indoor units.
These devices are typically placed near the customer's window where the WiMAX signal is strongest. They include various features, such as an integrated Wi-Fi access point that allows multiple devices in the home or office to connect to the WiMAX Internet. Additionally, they have Ethernet ports for direct computer or DVR connection if desired. The device also has one or two PSTN telephone jacks for connecting a land-line phone and using VoIP services. However, indoor gateways may require closer proximity to the WiMAX base station compared to externally installed units due to radio losses.
