The Great Hall is located on the 2nd floor and is used by residents for study and social activities. - The College Creek Mailroom is located on the 1st floor. - This mailroom receives packages for College Creek and the Campus Apartments and only receives mail for College Creek. - Campus Apartment mail is delivered by the Postal Service. Every resident will receive an email for each package that is ready for pick up.

- HSU has the LARGEST undergraduate botany program in the US! The Herbarium and greenhouse are great resources for our Botany program. - Largest Vascular Plant Herbarium in the CSU system. It contains over 100,000 plants specimens, which are preserved and cataloged. In addition to the live plants in the greenhouse, talk about professors traveling the world to bring back plants. -Dennis Walker- "went to China but didn't see the great wall, went to India but didn't see Taj Mahal, etc. . . instead, he said, "I'm always in some little gully somewhere trying to find some weird mystery plant to show my HSU students."

Native American Forum

In acknowledgement of this and our respect for other local tribes, elements of the Forum reflect the traditional local tribes' architecture (for example, the circular detail on the entrance is a nod to the round openings of the traditional houses). You see a real example of the traditional local Indigenous housing, at Sumeg Village in Patrick's Point State Park.

That's a pretty much unparalleled opportunity that's unique to HSU!

- Hubb's Beaked Whale (located in SCI B lobby) was found on the beach not too far from here. Our students and professors determined during their initial dissection and studies that she had an ear infection and that is why she got off course and beached. Her skeleton was put together by members of the HSU Vertebrate Museum—the largest collection of specimens in the CSU system. - Hands on example: Every addition to the collection is a student and faculty hands on-project. We have additional whales buried on the coast in preparation for us to add them to our collection. When we unbury them and bring the bones to campus, how do you think we clean the bones to preserve them for scientific research? Our team of Flesh Eating Beetles (not students, sand blasters or coca cola as some visitors have guessed). The beetle technique is used to clean the skeletons of large and small mammals in our Vertebrate collection

- GE and Science labs and lectures take place here, always with 25 or fewer in each lab. - The FRED TELONICHER Marine Lab (located 14 miles north of HSU) - The Coral Sea research vessel in Eureka (ONLY research vessels in the nation that is complete for UNDERGRADUATE student research at sea). Other schools may have a research vessel, the difference is you're not likely to use it until much later in your education.

Dr. Sillett has done groundbreaking canopy research, as the first scientists to climb 370+ feet into the redwoods to discover things previously unknown to science.

- Astronomy offered as a pathway, not a major. - Gravity Research Lab and other resources give students great study opportunities (where our students are currently conducting the largest worldwide test of Einstein's Theory of Relativity). - Fickle Hill Observatory. Two HSU physics students, Amy and Arik, helped HSU purchase the only university telescope in California dedicated to undergraduate research, attended and presented at major astronomical conferences, worked on extragalactic survey research at the world renowned Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico (very rare for undergrad students anywhere). . . OH and while working at Arecibo, THEY DISCOVERED A GALAXY. Nice resume- attended HSU, studied physics, and discovered a galaxy. This was part of a large project that lead to many other galaxy discoveries.

- Variety of watersports, exercise classes, swim classes for local kids, lifeguard training, log rolling (yep) and scuba diving (more than 13 feet deep, for Scuba)! - HSU trains more scientific divers than any other school in the CSU system and we offer a minor in Scientific Diving. During finals week you may find them taking their written final at the bottom of the pool. **This is just the TA's, or the "Leadership Diving" course, that do this** - The scuba program dives all across the state - many dives take place in Ft. Bragg, Monterey, and each year the program takes a trip to USC's Wrigley Institute on Catalina Island - Students get into all Athletic events for free with a valid HSU ID - Plus many more intramural, club & rec sports, and PE classes offered in many sports, dance, martial arts, and even bowling (off-campus). There is something for everyone, whether serious athletes or just out for fun!

- Our nearly 50-foot climbing wall is heavily used by our Rock Climbing Team who recently placed 1st in our region (Northern California) and 2nd in the nation! Now an official club sport. - 30 new aerobic machines, a 24-piece circuit-weight machines and over 10,000 pounds of free weights, as well as an indoor track/field used for many purposes! The field material was a partnership with the California Waste Management Division saving nearly 7000 tires from going into the landfill. - The Fieldhouse field cover was a partnership with the California Integrated Waste Management Board using recycled tires and preventing nearly 7000 tires from going into landfills. - Gym paid for with tuition. Community can acquire a daypass if a student shows a valid HSU ID on their behalf for $8, and a 10 day pass for $60.

- Constructed in the early 1930s as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Works Project Administration (WPA). - Only picks, shovels, and wheelbarrows were used in order to create as many jobs as possible. - This helped bring jobs to Arcata during the Depression over 2000 people employed!. - The field is made of about 30,000 recycled tires, track is also recycled material.

Founders Hall

- First permanent building at HSU—completed in 1922 (walk in first entrance, down the hall, and then out the main entrance so that folks see the courtyard and small classes) - It was the entire campus in 1922. We sure have grown! - Our campus' largest lecture hall with 154 seats (even so, this is relatively small for a CSU). - Designed by a southern Californian architect in the Mediterranean style used throughout southern California, with open archways and a portico with a common courtyard. It was warm when he visited, but the arches were later enclosed due to cold and wet weather for the comfort of our students.

The Depot - A great line up of local bagels, wraps, smoothies and much more. - Food points purchased through housing packages can be used at all dining service locations and students can add c-card point to the same card to use all over campus. Associated Students - HSU students sit on just about every governing committee, influencing decisions such as hiring, budget, student fees, general education requirements and campus planning. - This is a VERY student centered campus- the Student Pledge, Humboldt Energy Independence Fund, CCAT, and Service Learning are just a few examples of how student initiatives shape the future of HSU! Centre Arts - Offers an incredible line up of nationally/internationally known musicians and performers. Tickets for events are sold here.
