The three key competencies that distinguish exceptional performers are commitment, achievement drive, and initiative and optimism. Achievement drive refers to the determination to reach a specific level of excellence, while commitment involves embracing set goals to attain the desired standard. Meanwhile, initiative and optimism enable individuals to not only seize opportunities but also overcome obstacles incrementally. These competencies are valuable for achieving set goals. As a substitute teacher, I can employ these core competencies to assist underachieving students, which will ultimately pave the way for advancement to positions where I can have a greater impact on more students.
According to Goleman (2009), motivation competencies are the emotional tendencies that drive us towards achieving our goals. As a substitute teacher, my primary objective is to foster a positive learning environment for my students. Therefore, Goleman's commitment core competence holds significa
...nt relevance in my profession. It is widely recognized that teachers have a profound impact on students' learning and development, thereby making commitment a crucial element for educational success.
To effectively use the commitment competency, it is essential to maximize the initiative and optimism competency. This allows for not only identification with the organization but also involvement in its effective functioning, ultimately leading to better performance. By striving for the set standards, the achievement drive can be utilized to master the content of all subjects taught. One example of practicing good instructional leadership in the classroom resulted in recognition, and it is believed that Goleman's three competencies of motivation played a significant role in demonstrating effective teaching styles. Goleman (2009) emphasizes the importance of balancing initiative with social awareness to avoid unintentional negative consequences.
Therefore, I can apply the three
competencies in involving my students. For example, I frequently come across students who struggle in specific subjects but excel in others. The competency of initiative and optimism has proven to be valuable in these situations as it has taught me the importance of seizing opportunities and overcoming obstacles to feel successful and helpful. Goleman (2009) highlights the significance of optimism in various organizations where it has been shown to enhance productivity.
Teachers should always support students and provide practical opportunities for success, as different individuals have different learning needs. By going above and beyond expectations, doing whatever it takes to achieve my goals, and seizing available opportunities, I believe I can soon provide positive learning experiences for my students. As a professional substitute teacher, I will utilize Goleman's core competencies of commitment, achievement drive, initiative, and optimism to offer the best learning experience for my students. These competencies have taught me that each student requires unique experiences, allowing me to respect their individual needs.
