A rising and ongoing social problem today in the United States is the issue of gun control. Americans are divided in a fight whether gun laws should become stricter or less strict than they currently are. Gun control is linked to other social problems such as racism and the inequality between men and women. What are the benefits and disadvantages of gun control? The big controversy starts under the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

What hinders one to say we need better gun control? Lately in the U.S., there have been multiple mass shootings. A mass shooting is a shooting of at least four people in the same area around the same time. In the past year of 2018, there was a total of 340 mass shootings recorded. Prior to 2018, in 2017, 346 mass shootings were recorded. Scho

ols are regarded as safe spots but lately, multiple school shootings have occurred in multiple states. 17 students and staff members were killed at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida outraging schools across the country. In response, stricter safely guidelines were put into place such as see-through backpacks so weapons could not be hidden. Gun access is becoming too easy for the public. There is no log of guns purchased or gun owners and someone as young as 18 years old can purchase a shotgun or a rifle.

The number of guns in the U.S. comes near to the number of inhabitants. Gun ownership is a challenge of power. Many more people are purchasing guns in need of self-defense, but only using a gun in need of self defense should decrease the number of shootings. The only limit

for gun owners are those who possess a criminal record, immigrants without a legal status, military members who have left the service with a dishonorable discharge, people suffering from a mental illness and others. There are sellers that do not do background checks creating the gun show loophole.

In America, we have criminals on the run and innocents being killed. Some can have a reason for killing such as money and drugs, but most others are questions of power. What is the need to mass shoot a school, a concert, a synagogue? With religion, people argue on which religion is superior and ‘real’ but why the need to go to a concert because you do not like a singer or a school because the education system is unfair? What justifies their action to hurt multiple to solve a single problem?

With gun control, the sales of guns will be better regulated and checked upon. Guns need to be harder to obtain for the public. Guns that are up for purchase to the public should be downsized to the smaller, less mass destruction guns. Smaller calibers will decrease the numbers of mass shootings. A tighter grasp on gun control will make others feel safe a secure. How can we go out and enjoy life if almost everyone owns a gun and can carry it on them in public as long as they carry a gun license? We worry about our freedom, but freedom is taken away when we are all on either side of a gun.

Another reason about the controversy of gun control is the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The Constitution states we have the right

to bear arms and it shall not be infringed. With stricter gun control, Americans feel their rights are being taken away because they are being infringed. In order to have gun control but keep the second amendment word for word, we need to sell smaller, less destructive guns. Small calibers are enough to protect for self defense which is the only legal reason one should be killing someone. Shops need to be stricter in their logs of checking everyone’s criminal backgrounds. Fugitives, criminals, mentally ill, and others who should not have a gun in their possession. Loopholes need to be checked and systems need to be updated immediately. The justice system needs to be stricter within itself. All shooters should be sentenced for life. Its like take a life, give a life. We need fairness to create equality. The local, state and federal governments need to work together more closely. We have states who are super strict and other on the opposite side of the scale. Guns should not be allowed to be carried openly in public. Concealed carry is a bit safer requiring a permit but some states allow permits to be easily granted. It is one thing to own a gun for hunting, but another to possibly cause public destruction.

With stricter laws, guns will be easier to log and track. Restrictions on age should be changed. 21 is the age of a legal adult, but at that age, the brain is still developing. On the other end of the spectrum, the elderly should not be allowed a gun after a certain age. The function of the brain starts declining. “The only thing that

stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” News gun owners should attend mandatory gun training classes. Guns aren’t to fool around with and should be handled in an appropriate manner. Education changes the end look.
