What is Red Green Color Blindness?
Red-green color blindness, also known as protanopia or deuteranopia, is a genetic disorder that affects the eyes’ ability to accurately perceive colors. This condition is caused by a mutation in the gene which codes for an enzyme responsible for producing the red-sensitive photopigment. People affected by this disorder cannot distinguish between red and green colors and often experience difficulty with other colors in the spectrum as well.Though many people with red-green color blindness can still perceive some level of color, they have difficulty distinguishing between these two particular shades. This can be especially difficult when trying to match clothing or sorting items according to their colors. In addition, some individuals may have trouble reading maps or recognizing traffic signals due to their inability to recognize varying shades of green and red. In most cases, this condition is inherited from one’s parents; however, it can also be acquired later on in life due to certain diseases or exposure to certain drugs or chemicals. Fortunately, there are treatments available which aim at helping individuals improve their ability to distinguish between hues by using specialized lenses such as EnChroma glasses which enhance color perception by filtering out certain wavelengths of light. In conclusion, while red-green color blindness can present difficulties on a daily basis for those affected by it, there are several treatments available that may help reduce the impact of this disorder on one’s quality of life.
