What is Progressive Era?
The Progressive Era was a period of social, political and economic reform in the United States from 1890 to 1920. It was marked by dramatic changes in industry, agriculture, finance and labor. Progressives sought to address issues such as poverty, corruption, inefficiency and social injustice. The movement was driven by the belief that government should be an active partner in promoting the welfare of its citizens.Progressives sought to reduce inequality and protect vulnerable groups such as children and workers through legislation. They also established a number of regulatory agencies such as the Interstate Commerce Commission (1887) which regulated railroads; the Food and Drug Administration (1906); and the Federal Trade Commission (1914) which helped regulate business practices. Progressives also worked to pass laws that established minimum wages, maximum hours for workers, child labor laws and workplace safety regulations. The most significant accomplishment of the Progressive Era was arguably Women’s Suffragethe right for women to votewhich became law with passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. This victory led to more progressive reforms including greater access to education for women, expanded roles for women in politics, labor rights protection for both genders, support for public health initiatives and other measures aimed at empowering individuals economically and socially. In addition to these important advances made under Progressive leadership at both state-level governments as well as at federal level administrations like those led by President Theodore Roosevelt or Woodrow Wilson; philanthropists like Andrew Carnegie or John D Rockefeller used their wealth towards uplifting communities through charitable institutions like libraries or museums while industrialists like Henry Ford improved efficiency on their factory floors with better machinery or higher wages paid out to employees all while aiming towards improving life quality within communities they actively aided throughout this era of progressivism Ultimately then, it can be said that The era saw some major transformations due largely in part due to strong leadership from individuals passionate about improving conditions within US society leading toward greater freedom & equality not just among men but between men & women too – making progressive reforms one of America’s most transformative periods yet.
