What is Pre Algebra?
Pre-Algebra is a foundational mathematics course that lays the groundwork for future mathematics courses. It introduces students to concepts and principles that are essential for success in algebra, including order of operations, linear equations, and basic problem solving skills. Pre-algebra also serves as an introduction to the language of mathematics by introducing the use of variables and symbols. One of the main objectives in pre-algebra is to develop understanding and proficiency in manipulating numbers and operations. Strategies such as estimation, decimal computation, factoring, fractions, properties of operations (commutative, associative) are introduced so students learn how to apply them when solving problems. In addition to these concepts, students also learn how to solve equations using graphical representations as well as linear equations with two unknowns. Pre-algebra provides an excellent foundation for learning more complex math topics later on in school because it focuses on critical thinking skills needed for higher level mathematics classes like Algebra 1 & 2 or Geometry. Students will be able to use their pre-algebra knowledge when working with functions or graphing linear equations. Additionally they will be able to recognize patterns which can help them determine what methods should be used when solving a problem or making predictions about future trends based on past data sets. Overall pre-algebra is an essential course that all students should take before entering into high school math courses so they have a strong foundation upon which they can build their mathematical knowledge upon later on in their education journey.
