What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that works to assess, diagnose, treat, and prevent physical dysfunction and injury through the use of therapeutic exercise, manual therapy techniques, modalities (such as ultrasound), and education. Physiotherapists help individuals maintain optimal levels of physical movement and function throughout their lives in order to improve quality of life. Physiotherapists play an important role in restoring movement and daily functioning after illness or injury. For example, they can help people who have experienced traumatic events such as a stroke or spinal cord injury regain their ability to walk or perform everyday activities. They also work with athletes to reduce pain from sports injuries, improve strength and flexibility for optimum performance on the field or court, and help prevent future injuries from occurring. Additionally, physiotherapists assist those with chronic illnesses like arthritis by teaching them exercises for joint protection and mobility improvement. Physiotherapy treatments vary depending on the individual’s condition but may include various types of exercise programs (e.g., aerobic conditioning) aimed at increasing muscle strength; stretching; manual therapies including massage; acupuncture; heat therapy such as infrared radiation/ultrasound/whirlpool baths; electrical stimulation using transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS); balance training; postural re-education; aquatic therapy; soft tissue mobilization/release techniques such as myofascial release/trigger point release; gait analysis/retraining; ergonomic evaluations focusing on safety at home or work place environment improvements involving furniture modifications etc.; counseling regarding lifestyle modifications related to diet/exercise/stress management etc.; breathing retraining techniques among other interventions tailored uniquely according to each patient’s needs.Overall physiotherapists strive to empower patients so they can be self-managing in all respects–physically active now while taking preventive measures against potential health issues down the road. By providing evidence based care that promotes healing without relying solely on medications which may bring about undesirable side effects physiotherapy has become an indispensable part of modern healthcare services both within hospital settings but especially outside it where physical therapists are increasingly being called upon by primary care physicians in order to provide rehabilitative services during follow up visits following surgeries or hospitalizations .
