What is Pharmacy?
Pharmacy is a profession that is becoming increasingly important in our modern world. Pharmacists play an essential role in the healthcare system by helping to ensure that patients get the medication they need safely and effectively. Pharmacists also advise health care professionals on drug therapy options, provide patient education about medications, and work with other health care providers to improve medication safety and patient outcomes. The responsibilities of pharmacists have grown significantly over the years as medical advances have increased our knowledge of drugs and their uses. Today, pharmacists must be knowledgeable in areas such as pharmacology, biochemistry, toxicology, therapeutics and clinical pharmacy practices. In addition to dispensing medications, pharmacists may also prepare compounded medications for special needs patients. They may also participate in research projects related to new pharmaceutical products or treatments.Pharmacists are often highly respected within their communities due to the important role they play in providing quality healthcare services. In order to become a pharmacist one must complete a Doctor of Pharmacy degree program which usually takes four years after completing an undergraduate degree program or two years after completing a pharmacy technician program at a college or university approved by their state board of pharmacy. Pharmacists must then pass an examination before being licensed by their state board of pharmacy and must maintain continuing education courses throughout their career in order to stay up-to-date on current developments in the field of pharmacy practice. In addition to providing direct patient care services, many pharmacists choose to specialize in certain areas such as geriatrics, cancer treatment management or infectious disease management which further enhances the services they can offer patients within their community.
