What is Percy Bysshe Shelley?

Percy Bysshe Shelley was a renowned English Romantic poet of the 19th century. He was born in 1792 and died in 1822 at the age of 30. He is best known for his powerful and influential poetry which expressed his views on revolution, freedom and equality. His works are still highly revered by many today.Shelley was an outspoken advocate for free-thinking and social reform, particularly against established religion and the politics of his day. This is reflected in much of his work, such as The Revolt of Islam and Prometheus Unbound. In these works he explored themes such as rebellion against authority, human potentiality, nature’s beauty and freedom from oppression. His other famous works include Ode to the West Wind, Adonais and In Defense of Poetry.Shelley wrote prolifically during his short lifetime, producing over 800 poems as well as political essays and several plays. He has been credited with helping lay the groundwork for modern poetry through his use of strong imagery, vivid language and innovative forms such as blank verse. His literary influence can be seen in later poets such as Walt Whitman, Robert Frost and T. S Eliot who all took inspiration from him in their writing styles. Though not widely popular during his lifetime due to the controversial nature of some of his work, Shelley’s legacy lives on today through its continued relevance to readers around the world who are inspired by its timeless themes that transcend time itself.
