What is Optometry?
Optometry is a healthcare profession that focuses on the examination, diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases and disorders of the visual system. Optometrists provide comprehensive vision care to individuals of all ages and backgrounds, including preventative care and diagnosis for vision concerns such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia. They also diagnose and treat diseases of the eye such as glaucoma or cataracts. Additionally, optometrists may prescribe corrective lenses like glasses or contact lenses to improve vision. Optometrists receive specialized training in optometry school in order to diagnose eye conditions efficiently and accurately. After completing undergraduate studies in a field such as biology or chemistry, aspiring optometrists must complete four years of optometry school which includes both classroom learning as well as clinical training with patients. Upon completion of their degree program they must take an exam administered by their state’s board of optometry to become licensed practitioners. The practice of modern optometry has advanced significantly since its inception in the late nineteenth century. Today’s technology allows for faster diagnoses with more accurate results than ever before. Some examples include auto-refraction machines used to measure eyeglass prescriptions quickly; ocular coherence tomography (OCT) imaging devices used to detect very small changes within the retina; digital retinal photography utilized for early detection and monitoring of age-related macular degeneration (AMD); corneal topography devices used for diagnosing different types of corneal disease; visual field analyzers used to test peripheral vision levels; tonometers used to measure intraocular pressure associated with glaucoma; slit lamps utilized during examinations for signs associated with cataracts; and automated phoropters allowing for more precise prescription measurements than manual methods can provide. Being an optometrist can be incredibly rewarding due to its potential impact on people’s lives every day through providing quality eye care services that aid in maintaining healthy eyesight throughout life.
