What is Mid 17th Century?
The mid 17th century was a period of immense change and upheaval in Europe. It saw the beginning of the Enlightenment, the rise of absolutism, and much conflict between different states. This period also saw a number of technological advancements and discoveries that would shape the future. The emergence of absolutism marked a major shift in political structure across Europe during this time period. The belief in absolute rule by one ruler was popularized by rulers such as Louis XIV of France, Charles I of England, and Frederick William I of Prussia. This new form of government brought with it increased taxation and demands for military service from their subjects, which helped to fuel unrest in many areas. At the same time, advances in technology had an impact on lifestyle during this era. Scientific breakthroughs such as Isaac Newton’s laws of motion helped to explain how things moved in the natural world around us. This knowledge was used to create more efficient machines for agriculture and industry, creating an industrial revolution that changed how people worked and lived forevermore. Additionally, discoveries made by Galileo Galilei regarding astronomy were instrumental in helping people understand our universe better than ever before. Finally, wars were commonplace throughout this period as different states sought power and influence over each other’s territories or resources. Some notable conflicts included The Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648), The English Civil War (1642-1651), The Franco-Dutch War (1672-1678) ,and The War Of The Spanish Succession (1701-1714). These wars resulted in massive losses both economically and socially; however they also had a lasting impact on European culture as they helped shape political boundaries which still exist today. Overall, the mid 17th century was an incredibly tumultuous time filled with change on multiple fronts – politically, technologically, socially and culturally – that shaped much about what we know today about Europe’s history during this era.
