What is Medieval Art?
Medieval art is a term used to describe the artistic period of Europe from the 5th century to the 15th century. The art produced during this period was varied and often featured religious themes, as many works were commissioned by churches or royalty. Because of its long span, Medieval art can be divided into several distinct periods including Early Christian Art (5-7th centuries), Romanesque Art (9-12th centuries) and Gothic Art (13-15th centuries).Early Christian art focused primarily on religious iconography such as mosaics, frescoes and illuminated manuscripts. These works depicted stories from the Bible or scenes from everyday life in order to promote faith amongst worshippers. This type of artwork also included grand sculptures depicting saints or martyrs which were placed inside or outside churches for public veneration. Romanesque art emerged out of Early Christian styles but began incorporating elements from classical antiquity such as more naturalistic figures and richer colors. This style saw an increased emphasis on decorative details such as intricate carvings along with larger pieces like giant stone reliefs that adorned church walls. During this era, artists also began experimenting with new mediums like stained glass windows which allowed them to create vivid images that told complex stories about religion through light and color. Gothic art marked a major shift in both aesthetics and techniques compared to previous eras, characterized by more realistic imagery combined with bolder forms of expression. Artists began using linear perspective to create lifelike paintings while sculpture moved away from traditional poses towards graceful flowing movements with elaborate drapery clothing their figures’ bodies. Architecture too underwent dramatic changes; soaring cathedrals filled with breathtaking stained glass windows exemplify this transition perfectly. Overall, Medieval art was a diverse blend of different influences ranging from Christianity to classical antiquity that shaped Europe’s visual culture for hundreds of years. Its impact can still be seen today in modern architecture, literature, music and so much more.
