What is Medical Coding And Transcription?
Medical coding and transcription is a critical link in the healthcare system. It is the process of translating medical reports and documents into codes that can be used to store and retrieve information. Medical coding specialists assign numerical codes to patient records, diagnoses, treatments, medications, procedures, services provided by physicians, and other activities related to healthcare. These codes are then stored in electronic health records (EHRs) or other databases for use in billing and data analysis.Transcriptionists listen to recordings from physicians’ visits with their patients and create written accounts of what was discussed that include diagnosis, treatment plans, medications prescribed or other important notes including any follow-up recommendations made by the physician. This information is then entered into EHRs or databases for future reference. Transcriptionists must have a good ear for understanding colloquialisms used by doctors who may speak quickly with accents or dialects that are unfamiliar to them as well as a high level of accuracy when transcribing the words spoken by doctors. Both medical coding specialists and transcriptionists must possess an intimate knowledge of medical terminology since they will often encounter jargon that even physicians might not be familiar with due to regional dialects or specialty areas within medicine such as genetics or infectious diseases. Both professions require intense concentration during long hours spent on the job usually in isolated offices without much interaction with others making both jobs very demanding but rewarding at the same time for people who enjoy working independently on challenging tasks. Medical coding and transcription are important parts of our healthcare system because they enable us to access information more quickly which ultimately leads to better healthcare outcomes for patients all over the world.
