What is Longitude And Latitude?
Longitude and latitude are coordinates that determine a point on the Earth’s surface. Longitude is the angular distance measured east or west of the Prime Meridian at Greenwich, England, while Latitude is the angular distance measured north or south of the Equator. Longitude measures how far east or west of the Prime Meridian a location is located. It ranges from 0° to 180° east and west making up a total of 360° around the world. The 180th meridian marks where one day ends and another begins, thus creating time zones across different parts of our planet. Latitude measures how far north or south from the equator a location is located and ranges from 0° to 90° north and south respectively with both points meeting at each pole. This degree measurement creates parallels with each line being parallel to each other as they move away from each other towards either pole. Together, longitude and latitude are used to identify specific locations on our globe by giving us an exact coordinate that can be looked up in maps or GPS systems. By having this defined system we can accurately pinpoint any location on earth down to its exact coordinates within minutes if need be.
