What is Latin 3?
Latin is a classical language that has had a lasting impact on many modern languages. It is the official language of the Roman Catholic Church and was the language of literature, philosophy, law, and science in Europe for centuries. Latin was also the language used by philosophers such as Cicero and Virgil, who wrote some of their most famous works in Latin. The grammar of Latin is quite complex and intricate, with five cases (nominative, genitive, dative/accusative/ablative), four verb tenses (present/future/imperfect/perfect), three moods (indicative/subjunctive/imperative) and two voices (active and passive). In addition to its characteristics as an inflected language with noun declensions and verb conjugations, Latin also contains several idiomatic expressions that are still used today. As such, it can be challenging to learn at first but once you get familiar with its structure it becomes easier to understand. Latin has heavily influenced other European languages such as French and Spanish; they share many words that come from Latin roots or are adapted versions of existing words. Furthermore, most scientific terminology comes from Latin words due to its long history as one of the main languages used by academics all over Europe. Therefore an understanding of basic Latin can help one better understand these other languages more easily. Although it may seem daunting to learn at first glance due to its complexity and unfamiliarity compared to modern languages, learning basic Latin can have many rewards for those willing to put in the effort.
