What is Geography of North America?
North America is the third largest continent in the world and is made up of 23 countries. It is located in the northern hemisphere and its mainland is connected to South America by a land bridge, making it one of two continents that are connected. North America has an incredibly diverse geography, with climates ranging from subarctic to tropical and landscapes encompassing everything from mountains and deserts to grasslands and rivers. The Arctic Ocean lies along North America’s northern border, while the Atlantic Ocean lies along its eastern border. To the west lies the Pacific Ocean, while Mexico shares a border with Central America on the south-eastern side of the continent. The U.S.-Mexico border stretches 3,145 kilometers long across four U.S. states California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas as well as six Mexican states: Baja California Norte, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila de Zaragoza Durango y Tamaulipas. North America contains some of the highest mountain ranges in the world such as The Rocky Mountains which stretch for over 4500 miles from Canada through to New Mexico; The Appalachian Mountains which run down through Eastern Canada into Eastern United States; The Sierra Madre Oriental running down into Northern Mexico; Andes stretching from Columbia through Venezuela; And lastly Mount McKinley located in Alaska which stands at 20320 feet above sea level making it North Americas tallest peak. The continent also contains some of Earth’s deepest lakes such as Lake Superior in Ontario/Minnesota (which reaches depths of nearly 400 meters) and Great Bear Lake located within Northwest Territories/Nunavut (reaching depths of 400 meters). Other popular lakes include Lake Tahoe on Nevada/California Border (reaching depths reaching 500m) as well as Great Salt Lake located within Utah (reaching depths reaching near 200m). The climates in North American vary widely from region to region due to its size and location between both ocean fronts and multiple mountain ranges providing different air masses leading too very varying conditions depending on location throughout this vast continent. In Northern Canada you will find cold temperatures year round with frequent snow fall due too their close proximity too arctic regions where snowfall can reach up too 10-20 feet during winter months. On contrary parts such Florida experience tropical climate year round due too their close proximity to Gulf stream keeping temperatures warm all year long.
