What is Folk Music?
Folk music is a form of music that has been passed down through generations and is typically rooted in traditional culture. It often reflects the beliefs, experiences, struggles, and stories of a particular group or region. Folk music can be found all across the world and has become a way to bring people together to both share cultural practices and learn about other cultures. Folk music usually contains elements of storytelling, as it often tells stories about events or people in history. This style of music relies heavily on traditional instruments such as fiddles, banjos, guitars and harmonicas instead of more modern instruments such as synthesizers or samplers. Folk songs are typically sung with accompaniment from one or more performers playing an instrument. The lyrics for folk songs often tell stories about everyday life; they may cover topics such as love, loss, hope, joy, sorrow and struggle. Many folk songs also contain moral lessons that can be learned from listening to them. The melodies for folk songs are oftentimes simple but catchy; this allows them to be easily remembered by listeners so they can join in singing along with the performance if they choose to do so. Folk music is often used at community gatherings such as festivals and celebrations where everyone can join in singing along with familiar tunes while also learning something new about each other’s cultures.
