What is Emergency Medical Technician?

An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is an individual trained to respond in emergency medical situations and provide basic life support. EMTs are the first responders on scene, arriving before paramedics or other advanced care providers. They are responsible for assessing a patient’s condition, providing stabilization and treatment while transporting them to the hospital. This description may sound simple but being an EMT requires extensive knowledge and skill sets that only come with proper training, certification and experience.The education required to become an EMT varies depending on state regulations; some states require as little as 150 hours of instruction while others mandate up to 1000 hours of study prior to taking their licensing examination. The curriculum covers topics such as human anatomy & physiology, pharmacology, airway management, trauma assessment & management, patient assessment & history taking etc.. In addition to classroom instruction students must also complete hands-on clinical rotations at hospitals or ambulances services in order gain real-world experience working with patients. After completing all educational requirements potential EMTs must then pass a written exam given by their state’s respective agency or organization in order to be certified for practice within that particular state/jurisdiction. Once certified they may begin applying for jobs at local ambulance services or fire departments who offer EMS transport service and typically work long shifts often into the early morning hours if not overnight. Being an EMT requires dedication and commitment both mentally and physically due to the demanding nature of their job duties including responding quickly during emergencies which can involve high levels of stress under difficult conditions; however this rewarding career also provides immense satisfaction knowing you’ve helped someone when they needed it most making it one of the most important roles within our healthcare system today.
