What is Civil And Political Rights?
Civil and political rights are essential for a functioning democracy. They provide citizens with the power to participate in decision-making processes, hold their government accountable, and protect themselves from discrimination or abuse of power. This includes fundamental freedoms such as freedom of speech, assembly, and religious practice; access to fair elections; legal protection against arbitrary detention or torture; and respect for minority communities. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is an international document that recognizes civil and political rights as fundamental human rights owed to every person regardless of race, religion, gender identity or sexuality. It guarantees people’s right to due process under law, including the right to a public trial by jury if they are accused of a crime; freedom from slavery or servitude; equality before the law without regard to sex or nationality; and freedom of thought, conscience and religion. The UDHR also affirms people’s right to take part in the government of [their] country through free elections — meaning that voters should have equal access to voting opportunities regardless of economic status. Additionally it recognizes children’s right to be protected from economic exploitation by their parents/guardians as well as states’ obligation to combat poverty. In addition to this there are other documents like International Covenant on Civil & Political Rights which further elaborate on these matters i.e., its specific provisions about prisoners’ rights include protection from torture or cruel treatment while incarcerated, separation between men & women inmates when possible & ensuring adequate health care is provided. Unfortunately civil and political rights continue to be violated around the world today: LGBTQ+ individuals face discrimination in many countries despite laws protecting them from hate crimes being passed in some places – press censorship is rampant across parts Africa Middle East Asia where governments restrict what can be reported on news outlets so citizens don’t get an unfiltered view events occurring within their countries – even more alarmingly instances state violence remain prominent particularly those inflicted minority ethnic groups who often targeted because perceived disloyalty towards ruling party/government forces..It is therefore important that we continuously strive towards upholding these civil and political rights both nationally internationally so all members our global community can enjoy stable lives without fear oppression repression inequality injustice.
