What is Chemical Engineering?
Chemical engineering is a discipline that combines the principles of chemistry, materials science, physics and mathematics to develop efficient processes for the production of useful products. It is an interdisciplinary field that applies principles of physical sciences such as chemistry, physics, biology and engineering principles to design processes and products in industrial settings. Chemical engineering plays an important role in many industries including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, energy production and environmental protection.Chemical engineers are responsible for designing products, developing process technologies and manufacturing systems to produce these products efficiently. They work with chemists to develop new methods for synthesizing chemicals or extracting substances from raw materials; with engineers to design equipment used in chemical processes; with biologists and medical researchers to find new ways of using genetically modified organisms in drugs or other treatments; and with economists or government officials on policy issues related to energy production or environmental regulations. The job of a chemical engineer is complex and requires the ability to analyze data from laboratory experiments as well as use mathematical modeling techniques to simulate various scenarios before making decisions about how best to proceed. Another important skill for a chemical engineer is problem-solving being able identify problems within existing systems and devise creative solutions that will improve efficiency or reduce risk. Chemical engineers must also have excellent communication skills so they can effectively present their ideas both internally within their organization as well as externally during customer meetings or at conferences. As technology advances at a rapid pace, so do the challenges facing chemical engineers: they must stay up-to-date on all the latest developments in their field while continually striving for better solutions that meet customer needs while also protecting the environment.
