What is Charles Baker Harris?
Charles Baker Harris, or more commonly known as Dill, is a character from the beloved novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. He is the summertime best friend of Scout and Jem Finch and an important part of their childhood.Dill is a brave boy who moves to Maycomb Alabama from Meridian Mississippi every summer to stay with his Aunt Rachel. He was born in 1932 and his mother has left him with his aunt while she searches for work elsewhere. His parents are divorced but he still loves them both despite this. Dill is small for his age but he dreams big and loves adventure; which often leads him into trouble when he’s trying to help Scout and Jem out of sticky situations. His bravery allows him to stand up against bullies like Cecil Jacobs or other people in their town who have wronged them in some way. He also has an imaginative side which allows him to come up with creative ideas like how they can get Boo Radley out of his house, build a snowman during the hottest summer day, or even how they can sneak into the courthouse during Tom Robinson’s trial – all these fun ideas end up giving Scout and Jem some much needed respite from the racism that exists around them. This encourages them to be more courageous as well as having empathy towards those that are wronged by society due to their skin color or social standing – something they would not have been exposed too otherwise without Dill being there with them every summer. Ultimately, Dill teaches Scout and Jem valuable lessons about life such as courage, empathy towards others no matter their background or skin color, how friendship should exist between people regardless of differences between each other; these lessons make him an integral part of To Kill A Mockingbird’s plotline even though he isn’t present for most of it because he only visits once per year during Summer holidays at Maycomb County.
