What is Battles?
The Battles of Lexington and Concord are considered to be the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. The battles took place on April 19, 1775 in Massachusetts. The British had been sent to capture Samuel Adams and John Hancock, who were leaders of the Revolutionaries. However, they were warned ahead of time by Paul Revere and William Dawes that the British were coming. As a result, over 70 Minutemen (militia) gathered on Lexington Green to meet them. The battle at Lexington was short but resulted in eight deaths and ten wounded Minutemen. After leaving Lexingon, the British marched on to Concord where thousands more militia had gathered to fight them off. After several hours of fighting at Concord’s North Bridge, the British retreated back to Boston without achieving their goal of capturing Adams and Hancock or any weapons from Concord’s armory. Although it was a tactical victory for the Revolutionaries, it was also an important moral victory as well as it showed that even though outnumbered greatly by professional soldiers from Britain they could stand up against them and win a battle without much training or preparation. The success at Lexington & Concord spurred more people in America to join what would become known as The Patriots which helped cause more unrest among colonists leading eventually all out war with Britain which ended in America’s independence from Great Britain in 1783 after 8 years of conflict.
