What is AP Art History?
AP Art History is a course of study designed to help students gain an appreciation for the history and development of art throughout history. This class focuses on major works, movements, and periods in western cultures as well as non-western cultures such as Asian, African, Pacific Islander, Native American and Latin American artistic traditions. It teaches students the skills necessary to analyze works of art within their own historical contexts.The core topics covered in AP Art History include: Ancient Near East; Classical Greece & Rome; Early Christian & Byzantine; Islamic; Gothic & Renaissance Europe; Baroque & Rococo Europe; Americas, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and China/Japan/Korea. Each topic includes information about its origins and development along with discussion of significant examples from each period including painting, sculpture and architecture. In addition to these core subjects AP Art History also looks at the role that patronage plays in art production as well as censorship laws governing artwork during certain time periods. The main goal of this class is to provide students with a deep understanding of how different societies have expressed themselves artistically throughout time by creating masterpieces which are still widely admired today. By learning about these various eras’ styles, techniques and philosophies students can better appreciate contemporary visual culture by placing it within its proper context. Furthermore they will be more prepared for future studies involving not just the arts but other humanities courses such as literature or philosophy because they will understand how all those disciplines intertwine together through their shared use of symbolism meaning representation etc.. Overall AP Art History provides an interesting overview into world cultures past present and future while teaching valuable lessons regarding analysis interpretation creativity critical thinking problem solving communication skills collaboration teamwork reading comprehension and research abilities -all essential prerequisites for success in college.
