It was founded in 1898 to support hospitals in their mission to provide quality and accessible healthcare services for all. The AHA works to advance the health of individuals and communities by advocating for a better healthcare system and promoting best practices. The AHA is committed to improving the quality of care provided by hospitals across the country by providing resources such as educational programs, guidance documents, policy initiatives, research reports and publications. Additionally, it develops standards for hospital performance measurement and accreditation processes in order to maintain high-level patient safety standards. The AHA also advocates for policies that promote access to affordable health care coverage for all Americans. One example of an initiative supported by the AHA is its Value Initiative which focuses on creating more value-based payment models that reward providers who provide higher quality care while reducing costs.
