Having read the novel, Tess has come across as a very confusing character.

Many things happen to her, some of which she is responsible for and some that are due to fate. I will be addressing both sides of the argument, given explanations and quotes and then I will make a conclusion of whether Tess is responsible for her own suffering or if other people had an effect on her life.During the novel we will see a difference in Tess's character and how different issues such as love have influenced her. In chapter 2 Hardy compares Tess with the surroundings of Marlott "The sun blazes down upon fields as large as to give an unenclosed character to the landscape. " An unenclosed character gives us the impression that something's hidden, not visible like Tess'

s character. Our first impressions of Tess is that she comes across as not a very confident character and Hardy helps us see this by painting a picture in our minds "landscape painter" and gives us strong knowledge of Tess.

Tess helps out a lot around the house, as Tess's parents seem to be quite careless and unrealistic so she is left with all of the responsibility "Monday washing which had now as always lingered on to the end of the week".I think that Tess's family and where she lives could also make an impact on whether Tess is responsible for her own suffering as she lives in a very small community where everyone relies on each other so she hasn't really ever been out in the world on her own. In chapter 4 Tess takes the cart. Hardy starts the scene b

suggesting something bad is going to happen "strange shapes assumed by the various objects" Tess offered to take the cart to help out her family as no one else could.

We learn from this that Tess is a very proud member of her family and cares a lot for them. "Tess was not skilful in management of a horse" this is the impression that she really shouldn't be take the reins into her own hands but does as Abraham falls asleep. Tess becomes very tired and shouldn't be carrying on driving the cart but does " Tess awoke from the sleep into which shee, too,had fallen"Tess then has an accident with the cart where her horse prince dies by going into the morning mail cart.Tess is devastated and blames herself for this accident " in light of a murderess" Hardy blamed it on fate "blighted star" as before the accident we hear Tess and Abraham taking about which one they live on "A blighted one" I feel that in a way Tess is responsible for her own suffering as she should have been more aware of the atmosphere around her and shouldn't drive a cart when she's very tired, though she shouldn't of offered to go on the trip anyway as it wasn't her responsibility.

Tess's character is developing throughout chapter 5 and we see that she is a very negative character as she is feeling really guilty and no matter what anyone says to her she puts all of the blame for Prince's death on to her. Tess feels that if she goes to see the d'urbevilles it might make her feel less guilty for what

she did though her parents take advantage of Tess, and her being a weak character lets this happen. We know that Tess isn't a very confident character and she can be a bit shy so its no surprise to us when we find out that she doesn't really want to see them and doesn't know what to expect.Well I killed the horse mother, I spose I ought to do something" Also In this chapter this is the first time Tess and Alec meet. She is not experienced and is reluctant to anything he does. Alec tries to manipulate Tess by feeding her strawberries and we can tell that Tess feels very uncomfortable with this behaviour.

Her weakness is very obvious to Alec, which gives him more power though throughout this chapter we begin to see Tess forming a small fondness towards Alec. In chapter 11 Tess is on the journey with Alec.We can tell that Tess feels really uncomfortable around Alec as he keeps on suggesting uncalled for comments " Tess why do you always dislike me kissing me" Thought this chapter Alec makes a lot of other comments and goes to kiss Tess. Tess being a weak character doesn't say no strongly enough to Alec when all of these comments and actions are happening, so Alec keeps on trying and trying.

Also Tess calls Alec "sir" which gives him a sense of power and authority over Tess.Towards the end of the chapter Alec takes advantage of Tess whilst she is sleeping. She was sleeping soundly, and upon her eyelashes there lingered tears" Tess didn't know what was happening, she lived in a very small

community where she never had to deal with anything by herself she always had someone there, but "where was Tess's guardian angel? " I think that Tess could have prevented this from happening by throughout the day she could of said no more strongly but Tess isn't actually responsible for this happening, she's not used to being on her own, and I don't think she knows how to cope.In chapter Tess baby died. Tess's feelings towards the baby changed rapidly towards his death "darling baby" Tess felt guilty as she couldn't have a proper baptism for the baby. This was because she was brought up religiously "one of the village girls" and felt really guilty of how the baby was conceived, and as the baby was deteriorating she thought it was her duty to baptise him.

, or he wouldn't go to heaven. In her mind she could see the Devil as she thought she had sinned " a fiend with a 3 prawned fork" Tess asked her dad if he could get a parson but her dad refused as he feels ashamed of his daughter and doesn't want to help Tess then decided that this had to be done and that she would baptize the baby herself " I baptize thee in the name of the father, and of the son, and the holy ghost" this tells us that Tess has strong religious beliefs and just wants the best for her baby. After the babies death Tess asked the vicar for a Christian burial" the vicar felt himself cornered" and said no as it wouldn't be right as the baby hadn't been properly baptized, Tess kept

on asking but the vicar but the vicar said he must not for certain reasons and Tess became very upset and told the vicar she didn't like him " Then I don't like you" Tess gave the baby a Christian burial herself " the baby was carried in a small deal box" the baby was buried in a "shabby corner of Gods Allotment where he lets the nettles grow and where all anabaptised infants and the conjecturally domed are laid" This gives us the impression that where the baby was buried was a neglected corner but Tess was happy as it was in a churchyard so it was obviously holy and that's what Tess wanted.A proper burial. In this chapter we can tell that Tess has developed greatly and that she is more confident and has learnt a lot by this.

Chapter 56 is where everything in the novel builds up. Tess kills Alec and we find that Tess's character is strong for the first time and she knows what she wants. We can see a change in her character and how she becomes more independent and thinks about herself a lot more. Tess has a outburst of anger and does everything for Herself. She is hanged for the murder Of Alec and we feel sympathy for Tess because during that short amount of time where she is with her true love Angel, we know that her happiness is going to end.
