Spring Hill College

Student Academic Services for students with LD; Honors program offered as a supplement to students' residential and academic experience; Only Jesuit college with a Marine Biology major; 9 hours Religious Studies required for graduation; academic rigor not super intense, students say study abroad: you have to seek out opportunities not super accessible; Nursing program is very strong; It does not seem like graduating in 4 years is a high priority for a lot of students.

1200 students; AL and LA are the two most represented states; 60% female; fairly conservative; not the place for liberal or homosexual students

30% of students are in it. But none of the groups are housed. For parties: all parties are off campus, and students are bussed to and from them. Many parties require an invitation to enter.

students make of it what they will. There are plentiful opportunities available through Campus Ministry (masses, retreats, service). But students take what they want from it, or avoid it if they want to. They are required to take Religious Studies classes, though.

students often go to the beach on the weekend, staying with friends in a friend's parents' beach home; feels very southern slow pace of life; southern hospitality; small student body: you do know, or know of, everyone on campus. Social justice and community service are hugely emphasized. Students go to bigger state schools in region to attend football games on weekends. Common complaint: unhealthy cafeteria food.

Beaches: 3 or 4 within an hour's drive; Gorgeous campus - except one section of it that is a little run down/old; Weather is awesome during school year; too hot during summer

Frosh dorms: 1 for men, 1 for women. Standard, not fabulous. After frosh year, housing is co-ed. Could be suites, standard dorms, or apartments.

18 holes; greens fees are subsidized by tuition/fees, so it only costs a student $5 to play a round

Mobile, AL; Downtown: somewhat tired and run down but has a lot of history, and has potential; Midtown: huge, old, Civil War-era houses, plus apartments for young professionals; Closer to campus: malls, then a pleasant, safe-seeming residential neighborhood up on the hill; Mobile established Mardi Gras celebration before New Orleans did, but N.O. did it on a grander scale. Mobile still has a 2.5 week M.G. celebration that they are proud of.; Relatively cheap cost of living, i.e., can rent a 3 BR house for about 1,000/month
