Sports Medicine
The study and application of scientific and medical knowledge to aspects of exercise and injury prevention
Athlete’s Circle of Care
All individuals involved in care of the athlete; may include coaches, parents, certified athletic trainer, family physician, school nurse, massage therapist, nutritionist, personal trainers, and chiropractor
Team Physician
A physician who specialized in sports medicine and helps the athlete maximize function and minimize time away from sports, work, school; works in cooperation with the family physician
Family Physician
The primary physician in the care of the athlete; works in cooperation with the team physician
Physician Assistant (PA)
A midlevel health care practitioner who works interdependently with physicians to provide diagnostic and therapeutic care
Physical Therapist (PT)
A health care specialist who is responsible for performing treatments that require special training in therapeutic exercises, hydrotherapy, and for performing procedures dealing with individual muscles and muscular movement
Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA)
A health care specialist who works with physical therapists to assist in developing treatment plans for the rehabilitation of injury
A health care specialist who provides conservative management of neuromusculoskeletal disorders and functional clinical conditions
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS)
A specialist who designs and implements safe and effective strength and conditioning programs
National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT)
A specialist who designs and implements safe and effective strength and conditioning programs with individual clients
American Council on Exercise (ACE)
Fitness certifying organization founded in 1985. Provides certification for Personal Trainer, Group Fitness, Instructor, and Lifestyle and Weight Management Consultant
National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)
Founded in 1987. It provides education and credentials for fitness, sports performance, and sports medicine professionals
Sports Nutritionist
A health care specialist who designs special diets with the goal of enhancing athletic performance
Sports Psychologist
A specialist who works with athletes to recover from serious injury through emotional support. They also assist in goal setting and motivation
American College of Sports Medicine
Founded in 1954. It was intended to guide the convergence of different fields with a common focus directed toward the goal to include professionals from many fields in medicine and science
Personal Trainer
Is a fitness professional involved in exercise prescription and instruction. They motivate clients by setting goals and providing feedback and accountability to clients.
Massage Therapist
A specialist who promotes health and relaxation through therapeutic touch and manipulation of muscles.
