Federal agency set up in 1865 by Andrew Johnson to provide food, schools, and medical care to freed slaves and Civil War veterans in the South. Marked first social welfare program. Unfortunately it did not yield many positive results.

Used as a way to justify socioeconomic standing. "If you are poor, it is because you don't work hard enough." Theory of the Gilded Age.

The father of modern day philanthropy

Law that established old age insurance (social security), and assistance for the needy, children, and others, and unemployment insurance.

The federal program established in the Johnson administration that provides medical care to elderly Social Security recipients.

An expansion of Medicare, this program subsidizes medical care for the poor and disabled.

Covered by taxes to school district. Caused inequality among public school education.
