Adolescent Psychology

Media influence

Adolescence is the stage when kids experience a variety of physical as well as emotional changes in their bodies. This comes with psychological effects that affect the child’s relations at school, with parents as well as with peers. During this phase, they experience changes in their bodies that ultimately develop into adult bodies which are able of reproducing (Jamieson & Romer, 2008). Currently, media is disgracefully known to portray a negative control on the teenage. A lot of young youth are uncovered to abundant encounters with the media that have an unconstructive impact on their decisions, opinions and actions.

This is referred to the movies, video games, magazines and television shows that surround them each day. It controls several aspects of their lives including the choices tha

t they make about their physical appearance, health choices they make on drug and alcohol use, how they perceive beauty, employing premarital sex. They imitate what media exposes as attractive and okay. As they mature their values and aims tend to change as they split from the average values and they link to those presented in the media.

It is in adolescence that one struggle with deciding what is right and wrong and the media frequently emphasizes the existence of celebrities. Youth kids are known to copy their role models, not knowing the effects that could result in their deeds. In the fullness of time, teens are becoming more and more all ears on the useless things as a replacement for of the bigger picture (Buckingham, 2008). Their primary concern has changed radically. Media ads call attention that in order to be well thought-out as ‘cool’ we

ought to have wear the most up-to-date cloth, for that reason, many teens go after what is socially up to standard.

Media has been confirmed to be disadvantageous to the health along with the lifestyle of the young people. Media has a strong influence on the look satisfaction of the current young people (Jamieson & Romer, 2008). Young ladies are continually comparing their bodies to those that they see being promoted on television business. Approximately 1 million males and 10 million female in U.S are tormenting from eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia (Comstock, 2007). After seeing those watertight and beautiful models on the billboards and advertisements, they are disturbed by their personal body image. This has been known to be the key contributor to eating disorders around the planet.

Therefore media has the result to change one’s intellectual set up. Pictures of female bodies are seen in movies, magazines and television. These models engrave the ideal body figure into the minds of the young people (Strasburger, et.al, 2013). Research has shown that this thin and airbrushed model are connected with despair, loss of self-esteem and the development of destructive eating tendency.

It has been recommended that roughly half of all pre-adolescent girls are discontented with their outward show hence they diet. Additional, 50-70% of standard weight girls believe that they are heavy thus 90% of women are irritated with their body look (Comstock, 2007). These ads are not only promotion their products, but they are also advertising an entire way of living. The media promotes auburn, fit with outward physical perfection in people.

The media has a character for promoting unhealthy options, such as insecure premarital sex along

with drug and alcohol use. Media is giving the incorrect message to the youngsters that taking part in these activities is acceptable (Strasburger, et.al, 2013). I firmly believe that media is demolishing our culture with the values. Producers, moviemakers are aggravating sexual immorality in our society by unambiguously revealing with promoting sexual affairs. Media is still found glorifying adolescent pregnancies. Music as well plays a huge role in manipulating teens in the direction of becoming sexually active and practical, for instance, rock music is to some extent responsible for the rise of teen pregnancies.

A teenage intelligence is tremendously helpless to the external influences. When they see their much-loved performer doing something that is unsuitable they believe it becomes up to standard. Around 1 million teens get pregnant and give birth each year in the US (Comstock, 2007). Most of them are single. Teenagers who have babies are prone to health troubles and experience a maternal death rate of 2.5 times higher than women aged 20-24. The media spoil young minds with dishonest along with the mistaken understanding of sex with love.

It changes adolescent morals to the idea that since it is on TV that it is acceptable to emulate their behavior. Young ladies are imitating celebrities by purchasing their photo albums as well as dressing similar to them. Nowadays, 30% of women lose their virginity prior to 16 years (Comstock, 2007).Sexuality brutality has also become in style in music videos along with song lyrics. Rap lines are being condemned by child campaigner groups for communicating the false message to the adolescence concerning sex with drugs. Misogamy is a hateful remark geared towards ladies and a

lot of rap artists tend to include misogamy in their lines.

It has been noted that these days' young people waste more time reading along with listening to the lyrics through the internet and the type of electronic music participated at raves has been connected with the use of drugs as well as alcohol. Into the bargain, music videos with song lyrics encouraging premarital sex and drug use, this type of media has supported violent actions amidst young people (Strasburger, et.al, 2013). I believe that rap and heavy metal have been connected with irresponsible activities and below standard academic performance, increasing depression, the risk of suicide, smoking along with respect problems. The aggression in rock music initiates adolescents to consign violent crimes. Video games and cinema also play a prominent role in encouraging violence amid youth.

It is obvious that the violence represented through these entertainments are imitated by the adolescent who has trouble distinguishing among the flight of the imagination and what is suitable and satisfactory in a realistic environment. We stay alive in the world that depends to the highest degree on the media to pass on information, endow with entertainment and permit for communication on a reasonable basis all through our day after day lives(Buckingham, 2008). In conclusion, it is important that we be keen and on our guard in choosing what our young ones should be permitted to view and pay attention to, as we understand there is a direct association sandwiched between what one devours and what they in turn a value, how they behave and how they interrelate in society. Too much experience to the unconstructive features of the media can

be harmful to their emotions, mental as well as physical health.

The media manipulates how they recognize beauty, sexuality as well as how they work together socially. The off-putting media is detrimentally transforming our moral values of life and our attitude on society.
