Personal values are some of the motivating factors that people have and they greatly affect decision making process. Anytime people make decisions, the personal values come into play. These values make people feel complete and self-satisfaction. Personal values are related to decision making in that they are the main determinants of our goals and outcomes in life. It is easy to make decisions when we know our values. My values are the most important things in my life and they define my code of ethics which include family, personal integrity and happiness. This paper will focus on my core ethics and personal values in decision making. Decision making relies entirely on one’s personal values and code of ethics and moral standards. The values discussed below illustrate my personal values and how I use them to make
...decisions.
Family always come first in every decision I have to make. My parents have made realize the importance of family. Family is defined as a group of people associated with each other in aspects of residence, consumption and consanguinity. The value of family is my first priority in any situation that faces me. When in a difficult situation, the first people to contact is my family and seek their help and assistance. This is because considering the consequences either of the situation could have on the family is vital. In decision making, family has a great influence because being part of I am obligated to consult them. Family will always give the best advice for you to make informed decisions in life. Family will guide where other people cannot.
They will be there even when things go wrong and that
is the reason why family is my first priority personal value. My mother has made me understand that family can never abandon you and I will always have them to help me make decisions. For example, my family played a big role and helped me to decide the course I am taking in college. They knew what I am good at and what I had a passion for in life. This was an important decision for my life and my career. In addition to family, my integrity is of great importance in making decisions.
Personal integrity is another value that works in my decision making. Personal integrity refers to the aspect of being morally upright as a personal choice and maintaining the quality of honesty as well as strong principles morally. In decision making, upholding my moral standards is one thing that I consider vital. My parents brought me up upholding moral ethics and standards that I follow until now. Being honest with oneself is important in decision making as we decide based on what is right for us. Making a decision may seem easy but where ethical standards are followed it becomes difficult.
Situations seem favorable where moral principles are not a question. I have learnt not to follow the easier route where dignity and morals are lost along the way. Every time I am faced with a difficult situation I tend to consult my inner self to settle for the right thing. For example, deciding on the people who should be my friends is something I take serious in my life. Friends affect our values and associating with those without personal integrity impacts your decision
making significantly. I choose friends based on their moral and ethical standards. As much as integrity is vital in decision making I have learnt not to sacrifice my happiness whenever I make decisions.
Whatever we do in life we do it to seek happiness and comfort. Happiness is defined as the state of well-being that is pleasant and emotionally satisfying characterized by joy and contentment. I am faced by situation that would either contribute to my happiness or impact negatively. Keeping this in mind, I am careful to make decisions that will make me happy rather than those I regret later. Focusing on happiness is important in my life and as family has taught me, it is not right to compromise on happiness. If something is not making me happy then I have learnt to leave it. Sometimes I make decisions that do not make me happy at that moment but in the long run I will be happy about them. For all the decisions I make in my life, I evaluate how they will contribute to my happiness whether in the short run or long run. For example, I feel happy about this course I decided to take in college and I cannot wait for the long-run results in my career.
When faced by an ethical dilemma, I use these values to make the right decision. Family, happiness and personal integrity are my priority values in decision making. The values play a major role in my life in decision making. I follow an ethical process where I take time to think about the issues and the whole situation. I evaluate the right and the wrong thing
to follow. I take enough time to determine how to deal with the situation. Once my integrity guides me on what to do, I explain the situation to my family expecting last resort advice. I take time to internalize the advice and evaluate how helpful it is in terms of the questions at hand.
My personal values include family, personal integrity and happiness. Decision making relies entirely on personal values, code of ethics and moral standards. The paper has clearly shown how happiness, personal integrity and family are vital values in decision making. The process I use these values has also been discussed. From this, it is important for every individual to realize their personal values and the impact they have in their decision making.
