Marji's friend, Kaveh, who she likes leaves for the United States, they find out that Mohsen was drowned in his bathtub, Siamak's sister was executed in his place and then him and his family, including Laly, crossed the border hidden among a flock of sheep, Anoosh is arrested again, she is his visitor, then he is executed, Marji tells God to get out, the war begins

Khomeini's government occupies U.S. embassy, all universities are closed, ruins her dreams of being like Marie Curie, two men insult Marji's mother when she is not wearing the veil, Khomeini says on TV that to protect women from rapists, they have to wear the veil, her mother tells her to lie and say that she prays often, she goes to a demonstration with her parents, then they go on a family vacation together, the Iran-Iraq war progresses and Marji says she wants to fight

They are bombed by the Iraqis for the first time, Marji is upset because her father doesnt want to fight, the Iranian national anthem is broadcast on TV, her classmate pardisse's father dies in the war, she said she would rather him be alive and in jail instead of dead and a hero

People in the south were being bombed, had to flee northward, mother's friend Mali and her family have to come to stay with them, they could only save some jewels, when they are in the supermarket women are insulting southern women

at school they have to mourn the dead by beating their breasts every day, the children dont take it seriously, they teachers punish them and call their parents in, but the parents yell at the teacher, talk about the key they gave their maid mrs. Nasrine's son, Shahab, her cousin who started his military service right as the war began tells them about the children who are sent out to war, Marji goes to her first party

Her uncle Taher is suffering from the stress of the war and his son being in Holland, and is also smoking, he has his third heart attack because of a grenade, the director will not give him a permit to leave the country for surgery, Ebi and Marji go to see Khosro, Ebi's friend, who made fake passports and is housing a communist girl, Niloufar, Taher dies before he can see his son again, Niloufar is executed and Khosro flees, Taher is buried the same day his passport arrives

Her parents go on a trip to Turkey and get her illegal posters and Western clothing, she goes to illegally buy tapes and almost gets arrested by the Guardians of the Revolution

Mom is more pessimistic about the war than her father, Tehran is under attack and many fled, but they stay because her parents had hope for the future and her french education, while she is out shopping her neighborhood is bombed, her neighbor, Neda Baba-Levy, was in her house and died, Marji sees the turquoise bracelet attached to her hand

Marji, age fourteen, is expelled from school for hitting the principle, then talks back to the teacher at her new school, her mother gets very angry at her and tells her about what they did to Nilofaur (she was married and raped before she was executed), her parents decide to send her to Austria, when she is boarding the plane she turns and sees that her parents were faking that everything was okay
