1978, 3 children protest against Shah in the back yard, Marji looks up to Che Guevara instead of God, 400 people die in movie theater because of Shah, Marji tries to convince her parents to demonstrate with them

Marjane's father tells her about how the Shah overthrew her grandpa's father, her grandpa was a prince, he became the prime minister for the Shah, was constantly sent to prison for being a communist, Marji takes a bath to try to understand what her grandfather went through when they put him in a water cell

Her grandma moves in with them, she describes the obnoxious festivals that the shah had, her father is very late getting home from taking pictures of the demonstration and they think he is dead, he tells them about the widow who's husband was not a martyr but died of cancer but the demonstrators use him anyway, the adults laugh at that then so does Marji

Marji gets angry about the division of social classes when her father stops her maid, Mehri, from being in love with their neighbor, Marji and Mehri go to demonstrate on Black Friday

The Shah leaves and the country has a huge celebration, the teacher tells them to rip all of the pictures of the Shah from their school books, Marji and her friends try to beat up Ramin because his father was in the Savak (the Shah's secret police), her mother gets angry at her and makes her forgive Ramin

Political prisoners are released, they tell them about how they were tortured, gives Marji ideas for new games, then says the only place she feels safe is with God

Her uncle Anoosh is released from prison, tells her about how he was in prison for 9 years

Marji's friend, Kaveh, who she likes leaves for the United States, they find out that Mohsen was drowned in his bathtub, Siamak's sister was executed in his place and then him and his family, including Laly, crossed the border hidden among a flock of sheep, Anoosh is arrested again, she is his visitor, then he is executed, Marji tells God to get out, the war begins

Khomeini's government occupies U.S. embassy, all universities are closed, ruins her dreams of being like Marie Curie, two men insult Marji's mother when she is not wearing the veil, Khomeini says on TV that to protect women from rapists, they have to wear the veil, her mother tells her to lie and say that she prays often, she goes to a demonstration with her parents, then they go on a family vacation together, the Iran-Iraq war progresses and Marji says she wants to fight

They are bombed by the Iraqis for the first time, Marji is upset because her father doesnt want to fight, the Iranian national anthem is broadcast on TV, her classmate pardisse's father dies in the war, she said she would rather him be alive and in jail instead of dead and a hero

People in the south were being bombed, had to flee northward, mother's friend Mali and her family have to come to stay with them, they could only save some jewels, when they are in the supermarket women are insulting southern women

at school they have to mourn the dead by beating their breasts every day, the children dont take it seriously, they teachers punish them and call their parents in, but the parents yell at the teacher, talk about the key they gave their maid mrs. Nasrine's son, Shahab, her cousin who started his military service right as the war began tells them about the children who are sent out to war, Marji goes to her first party

were bombed often, had to run down to the basement of their building for shelter, go to a party to celebrate the birth of her cousin, when the sirens start the aunt gives her the baby and runs, on the way home they get pulled over and Marji and her grandmother have to go in first and get rid of all of the traces of alcohol in their house

Marji skips class with her 14 year-old friends, her mother gets angry at her and Marji calls her "The Guardian of the Revolution of this house", Iraq proposed a settlement to end the war, but Iran refused, Marji smokes her first cigarette and says that with it she kissed her childhood goodbye

Her uncle Taher is suffering from the stress of the war and his son being in Holland, and is also smoking, he has his third heart attack because of a grenade, the director will not give him a permit to leave the country for surgery, Ebi and Marji go to see Khosro, Ebi's friend, who made fake passports and is housing a communist girl, Niloufar, Taher dies before he can see his son again, Niloufar is executed and Khosro flees, Taher is buried the same day his passport arrives

Her parents go on a trip to Turkey and get her illegal posters and Western clothing, she goes to illegally buy tapes and almost gets arrested by the Guardians of the Revolution

Mom is more pessimistic about the war than her father, Tehran is under attack and many fled, but they stay because her parents had hope for the future and her french education, while she is out shopping her neighborhood is bombed, her neighbor, Neda Baba-Levy, was in her house and died, Marji sees the turquoise bracelet attached to her hand

Marji, age fourteen, is expelled from school for hitting the principle, then talks back to the teacher at her new school, her mother gets very angry at her and tells her about what they did to Nilofaur (she was married and raped before she was executed), her parents decide to send her to Austria, when she is boarding the plane she turns and sees that her parents were faking that everything was okay
