3.5-4 years old Utensil held with crude approximation of thumb, index and middle fingers Ring and pinkie fingers slightly flexed objects grasped proximally with continuous adjustments by other hand No fine localized movement of digits hand moves as unit

4.5-6 years old Utensil held with precise opposition of distal phalanges of thumb, index and middle fingers Ring and pinkie fingers flexed to form stable arch Wrist slightly extended Utensil grasped distally, MCP joints stablized, localized movement of PIP joints

4 months Visually attends to object, approached object if within 1 inch Contact results in hand pulling object back, squeezed against the other hand of body No thumb involvement

5 months Fingers on top of surface of object Press object into center of palm with thumb abducted

6 months Fingers on far side of object Presses object against opposed thumb and radial side of palm with wrist straight
