For the essay 'Analysing a trailer' we have watched and discussed a number of trailers from a video. I will be writing about trailers that I have seen and discussed about logos, scenery, music, amount of cuts in specific types of trailers, genre, which is the type of film it is based on and the company who has made or sponsored the film. Music tells us a lot about the film e. g. If the music is loud and has many beats to it, it is more likely to be an action film or if the music is slow it is likely that the film will be a romance or drama.

This is a brief description of what my essay will be based on. In most cases action or drama trailers display their titles at the end of the trailer, this is because they star

t with the most action based or suspense filled part so that the viewer will be hooked. It then shows short clips, which cut from scene to scene and then show the title of the film. At this time the viewer will know the basic story line and whether or not they would like to see it or not. In most trailers there is a commentary, which is clear, soft, but deep and states the actors/actresses starring in the film. This usually attracts the viewer's attention and they will be drawn to watch the whole trailer.

If the actors/actresses names were not mentioned the viewer may not be interested, the trailer may not catch the viewer's attention and so then it would be said that the film was poorly presented. Writing could als

be used to inform the viewer of which actors/actresses star in the film, this would be displayed on the screen in bold thick writing in a strong colour that will stand out e. g. red.

The name gives away a lot about the film e. g. Mission Impossible' implies that it would be an action film as it is about missions that are almost impossible.Music is also a clue in that it tells the viewer what type of film the trailer is advertising e.

g. if it is rock music then it is likely to be aimed at teenagers or is an action film, e. g. American Pie or Mission Impossible. Slow or music that is soft and gentle may suggest a drama or romantic film. In Chicken Run the music from The Great Escape gives the audience an extra clue to what the film is about.

It also adds a touch of humour to the film.Trailers are a series of quick cuts that give us the viewers a lot of images e. g. In the MI 2 trailer there are 22 cuts, in an action part although in Of Mice and Men there are 10 cuts in the same amount of time.

This was 1. 16 seconds. Usually in the last frame we see who produces the film and often information. I think that this is a much more interesting way of getting an audience attention than using a poster. Mission Impossible 2 the opening shot of this trailer immediately implies that the film has an action genre.

The opening shot which shows us the main actor in the film Tom Cruise hanging from a

cliff in the middle of no where, which already shows us that it is something impossible to do unless you are well prepared to know that you may die if you slip. Stars are a very important factor in marketing a film and so Tom Cruise has a good reputation from the audience for starring in these types of films and so when a new released film comes out to big screen they will normally edit and cut the best scenes from the film to show the audience the stars and what the film is about. The Sound effects for the opening shot of the trailer have been chosen very carefully and they make sure the audience knows this is an action film by them creating an intense atmosphere with fast and furious sounds. There is also a very dominating over voice throughout the trailer which tells the main actor, what he is to do (his missions).

The shot used in this trailer work well with the genre e. g. the close up shot of the glasses exploding on to the screen certainly shows off the special effects and this adds to the intensity of the films action. The opening of Chicken Run immediately determines the genre of the film to be a comedy. This film is an animated sort of cartoon and which the characters in it certainly show it's a comedy. There are all different shots of camera angles throughout the trailer.

The special effects in this trailer are mostly taken from using a computer due to the fact that it is an animated film. The music for the trailer is a well-known piece, which

implies escape and adventurous mischief. The voice over in this trailer just basically tells us important points of the film like the famous voices used for the characters, Mel Gibson and the title of the film. The title for the film is screened at the end of the trailer this is basically a skill used so we will remember the film. The stars in this film that do the voices for the characters are used very well, only the big names like Mel Gibson are mentioned to us in the trailer. As I compared and contrasted the differences between the trailers Mission Impossible 2, Gladiator and Chicken Run, there is a difference.

MI 2 is a fast and furious action trailer and with an intense atmosphere with sounds and sudden scenes of clips from the film. This trailer is certainly aimed at a particular audience, which is the audience who like fast action films generally being teens and men. The film also seems to contain a lot of violence according to the trailer. Chicken Run, in contrast is totally different which is an animated sort of cartoon and this is shown by the characters which are chickens that are trying to escape from there owners farm which are only fattening them up to eat. The audience approached by this trailer mainly seems to be children due to it being an animated film and a comedy, the film may also appeal to some adults.Gladiator is an action as well as MI 2 although I do think that it is a different type of action, in which the film is based on slavery in Rome many years ago and

MI2 is more modern, although it is a tense mood with quick scenes of the film.

I believe this film is aimed at older teens an up as it is more understandable by adults than younger kids. I have paid much attention to the trailer for Gladiator as it is a remarkable, ambitious film, produced by Universal and DreamWorks and directed by Ridley Scott, starring Russell Crowe. Its sound (music) is astonishing and is a very important part in the film; it shows this by the theatrical trailer and the theatrical teaser trailer. Its teaser trailer tells the audience a small piece about the story with rapid scenes and outstanding sound which they play during the scenes.

The theatrical trailer gives the audience a bit more information about the story line of the film which shows more scenes and slightly longer clips and the. The trailer ends its scene with Gladiator so the audience will remember the title. My opinion to which is the most important feature of this trailer-vision or sound, would be the overwhelming sound. Many films producers try to capture audiences' attention by using sound as well as vision, in which they hope, may give the viewer a clue to what the genre of the film is. The opening music (soundtrack) of MI 2, which is Limp bizkit, has an important part in the film as it is rock music which suggests to the audience that it is an action film.

This brings my essay to an end, as I have found many interesting pieces of information and facts and I have enjoyed working on it.
