question
Part A Carbon-14 (14C) is a radioactive isotope of carbon that decays to 14N at a constant rate. 14C is present in the atmosphere in small amounts at a constant ratio to both 13C and 12C, two stable isotopes of carbon. When carbon is taken up from the atmosphere by a plant during photosynthesis, 12C, 13C, and 14C isotopes are incorporated into the plant in the same proportions in which they are present in the atmosphere. These proportions remain the same in the tissues of an animal that eats the plant. While an organism is alive, the 14C in its body decays to 14N but is continually replaced by new carbon from the environment. Once an organism dies, it stops taking in new 14C, but the 14C in its tissues continues to decay, while the 12C in its tissues remains the same because it is not radioactive and does not decay. Thus, scientists can calculate how long the pool of original 14C has been decaying in a fossil by measuring the ratio of 14C to 12C and comparing it to the ratio of 14C to 12C present originally in the atmosphere. The fraction of 14C in a fossil compared to the original fraction of 14C can be converted to years because we know that the half-life of 14C is 5,730 years—in other words, half of the 14C in a fossil decays every 5,730 years. The graph below shows a standard graph of radioactive isotope decay. The red curve indicates the fraction of the radioactive isotope remaining (on the y-axis) over time in units of half-lives (on the x-axis). Recall that a half-life is the amount of time it takes for half of the radioactive isotope to decay.
answer
Time (half-lives): fraction of isotope remaining in fossil 1: 1/2 2: 1/4 3: 1/8 4: 1/16 5: 1/32 6: 1/64 7: 1/128 8: 1/256 9: 1/512 10: 1/1024
question
The graph below is the same as in Part A, but with the fractions converted to decimal values. For each decimal value, fill in the exponent to complete the scientific notation. Don't forget to indicate if the exponent should be negative (-). The first one has been done for you.
answer
Time (half-lives): fraction of isotope remaining in fossil 1: 10^-1 2: 10^-1 3: 10^-1 4: 10^-2 5: 10^-2 6: 10^-2 7: 10^-3 8: 10^-3 9: 10^-3 10: 10^-4
question
The graph you constructed so far applies to decay of any radioisotope. To calibrate it specifically to 14C, you need to calculate how many years must pass to reach the amount of remaining isotope for each point of the half-life curve. To calibrate the x-axis for 14C decay, you have to convert half-lives to number of years. Recall that 14C has a single half-life of 5,730 years. How many years make up 5 half-lives for 14C?
answer
28,650 years
question
The researchers found that the Neanderthal fossil had approximately 7.80 × 10-3 as much 14C as was present in the atmosphere around the living Neanderthal and the plants it ate. Approximately how many half-lives have passed since the Neanderthal died?

question
Using the 14C calibration on the x-axis, what is the approximate age of the Neanderthal fossil?
answer
40,110 years old
question
Recall that the analyzed fossil was found in the most historically recent (uppermost) layer containing Neanderthal bones of the excavated archeological site. Approximately when did Neanderthals become extinct at this location, according to the study?

question
The researchers cite evidence that modern humans (H. sapiens) became established in the same region as the last Neanderthals approximately 39,000-42,000 years ago. What does this suggest about the possible overlap of Neanderthals and modern humans in the region?
answer
Neanderthals and modern humans may have lived in the same region for up to approximately 2,000 years, or they may not have overlapped at all.
question
Carbon-14 dating works for fossils up to about 75,000 years old. Most dinosaurs went extinct 65.5 million years ago. Can 14C be used to date dinosaur bones?

question
Radioactive uranium-235 has a half-life of 704 million years. If it was incorporated into dinosaur bones, could it be used to date the dinosaur fossils?

Yes, after 65.5 million years only about one tenth of the 235U would have decayed, leaving plenty to measure in the fossils.

Some groups of elements react chemically in similar ways. For example, the chemistry of sodium and the chemistry of lithium are similar. The chemistry of chlorine and the chemistry of iodine are also similar. These similarities in chemistry result when different elements have similar __________.
answer
numbers of outer-shell electrons
question
When one or more pairs of valence electrons are shared by two neutral atoms, what type of bond is formed?
answer
a covalent bond
question
When do hydrogen bonds occur?
answer
when partial opposite charges on molecules come close enough to attract each other
question
Which of the following subatomic particles has appreciable mass and lacks a charge?
answer
neutron
question
What are the four most abundant elements found in living systems?

question
Phosphorus-32 (radioactive) has __________ than phosphorus-35 (normal).
answer
three fewer neutrons
question
The compound CaSO4 ionizes into a calcium ion and a sulfate ion (SO4). Calcium has two electrons in its outer shell. Upon ionization, what would you expect the charge on the sulfate ion to be?
answer
-2
question
Refer to this summary equation of photosynthesis to complete the sentences about chemical bonds and reactions. 6 CO2 + 6 H2O → C6H12O6 + 6 O2
answer
The equation shows a [chemical reaction]-- the breaking and forming of chemical bonds that leads to a change in the composition of matter. In the equation, Co2 is a [reactant]. In the equation, C6H12O6 is a [product]. In 02, the type of bond that holds the two oxygen atoms together is a [nonpolar covalent bond]. In H2O, the type of bond that holds one of the hydrogen atoms to the oxygen atom is a [polar covalent bond]. The number of oxygen atoms on the left side of the equation is [equal to] the number of oxygen atoms on the right side.
question
A covalent bond is likely to be polar if __________.
answer
one of the atoms sharing electrons is much more electronegative than the other
question
What is the role of van der Waals interactions in biological molecules?
answer
Although they are weak bonds, van der Waals interactions help to reinforce the three-dimensional shapes of large molecules.
question
The number of protons in an uncharged atom __________.
answer
equals the number of electrons
question
Consider this statement: Concentrations of trace elements in an environment above what is required by organisms generally have no effect on those organisms. Which of the following is a valid response to this statement?
answer
False. Elevated concentrations of some trace elements such as cobalt and chromium can be toxic.
question
The most common form of calcium has 20 protons, 20 neutrons, and 20 electrons. Which of the following elements would be an isotope of calcium?
answer
an atom with 20 protons, 21 neutrons, and 20 electrons
