The medical dilemma they have in this case is that if they stop feeding and treating her as per her wish then her live is threatened. This is because he has a condition affects her health wise if the body weight goes below 35 pounds. If the doctors and her family force Amelda to eat they would be interfering and infringing her right of choice. In order to make faster decision in such a case, the family and the medical fraternity have to rely on an ethical theory as a guiding principle in decision making.
The best ethical theory in the Amelda story is the utilitarian theory. Despite what Amelda wishes for, the decision made in this case should
be able to yield the best outcome for everybody. By putting her on forced feeding and treatment Amelda stands a chance of getting well again. Amelda’s good health will restore happiness and peace in the family, the doctors will feel a great job satisfaction for helping save a live. Putting her on treatment and forced eating will therefore yield the best results for all the parties involved in Amelda’s situation.
