Patrick Henry Speech to the Virginia Convention
answer
" I know not what course other may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death" Summary: In Patrick Henry's speech, he says that he must respectfully disagree with the previous speeches. He believes that the actions of the British mean that they are preparing for war. The colonists have tried to discuss the problem, but they are being ignored. Henry claims that the war has already begun. The colonists' only choices are to fight or to become slaves. In Benjamin Franklin's speech, he expresses his doubts about the Constitution. However, he still approves of the document. He supports his opinions with several reasons. Franklin feels that this Constitution is the best document that imperfect men can offer. He also thinks that it is important to show complete support for the Constitution. Rhetorical Devices Used: Restatement - repeating an idea in different ways Repetition - restating an idea using the same words Parallelism - repeating similar grammatical structures Rhetorical questions - questions that have an obvious answer and are not meant to be verbally answered
question
Tecumseh's speech
answer
The document I'm analyzing is Tecumseh's speech to the Osages that was written in the winter of 1811-1812. I chose this speech by Tecumseh, a Shawnee leader, because he made an effort to do everything he can to not let the white people infiltrate the grounds on which he built his life on. He brings up the issue that the reason why the others tribes didn't survive or was forced off their land was because they didn't help each other out. The same thing will happen to the Shawnee tribe and the Osages if they do not form an alliance. Tecumseh didn't stand by and let the White settlers, businesses and the US army take over his home, he spoke out to different tribes to get everyone that was left to unite and defend what is theirs. Tecumseh also brings up the point that they have treated the white men with hospitality and warmth and in return get nothing but animosity. This source is reliable because during this time there was a war going on to drive the Indians off their land either by force or death.
