This project aims to fulfill partial requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University, UK. The topic selected is "An Evaluation of the Business and Financial Performance of J Sainsbury plc for the year ended 24 March 2006 - 22 March 2008". Its objective is to enhance professional ability in conducting business and financial analysis of publicly listed companies and develop a financial analysis model applicable to similar retailing sector enterprises. The research project provides an opportunity for knowledge development and specialization as a financial analyst. J Sainsbury plc was chosen as a case study due to four reasons: it is based in the United Kingdom, follows International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs), has annual reports readily accessible online, and complies with IFRS by providing explicit statements on such co
...mpliance in their notes (IASB, 2003). This company's adherence to IFRSs corresponds with the focus of accounting studies on preparing and presenting financial statements according to these standards.
Obtaining economic data for the UK and food and groceries retailing sector was easier than accessing information about the Nigerian economy and industry-specific data. As part of my Skills and Learning Statement, I needed to conduct a case study on a foreign company outside of my domicile country, relying heavily on internet research. J Sainsbury plc operates Sainsburys Supermarkets, which is composed of 504 supermarkets and 319 convenience stores, as well as Sainsburys Bank. Established in 1869, it is the UK's oldest major food retail chain offering more than 30,000 items and services to around five million customers every week. The aim of this research is to assess whether the company reached its
'Making Sainsbury's Great Again (MSGA)' plan set in 2004 by analyzing its financial performance from 2006 to 2008 while also examining changes over time. These findings will support the current 'Recovery to Growth' expansion plan moving forward. To accomplish the objective, a set of objectives has been established, consisting of examining models, tools, and techniques for assessing strategic business and financial performance. Analyzing J. Sainsbury plc's strategic direction and position, evaluating operating and investment management decisions made by the company as well as its financing choices and dividend policies. Scrutinizing cash flow position and management to evaluate the ability of achieving the 'recovery to growth' plans, and drawing conclusions regarding the business and financial performance of J. Sainsbury plc. To guarantee a distinct sense of purpose and direction throughout the research process, it is crucial to concentrate on framing research questions after selecting a title and defining objectives (BPP, 2005). One method to achieve this is by formulating four research questions for my own research project.
