question
-Limited, temporary response to those most in need - implemented only when all else fails -Government plays limited role - family and market are the means for people to have their needs met -Highly targeted to those in need -State only steps in as a last resort -Benefits are very low to discourage use -Looks at it as saying "it's not our problem you cannot find work"
answer
Residual Approach
question
-Necessary public response to ensure a reasonable standard of life and health for all citizens -Belief that people can not always meet their needs through family and work -Publicly funded and organized programs to 'even out' economic differences
answer
Institutional Approach
question
-Social problems seen as a built-in feature of a society that is exploitive -Injustices arise from normal operations of market and the advancement of private concentrations of ownership and wealth -Social inequalities are seen as a built in feature of society. Social policies stereotype and discriminate against groups of people based on race, age, gender, sexual orientation, class, & ability - this negatively affects their livelihood -A structural approach has never underlined Canada's official social policy -Take a broader approach that will eventually help people
answer
Structural Approach
question
What does this mean for social welfare? -child tax benefits (those who are struggling the most financially will get the most child tax benefits) -taxing those who are making more money so that those who are struggling can get help -support for students in order for students to pay off OSAP loans -taking pressure off of other social services such as food banks -old age security decreased from 67 to 65 -commit to housing in Northern communities (more accessible and better quality) -enforce more protection regarding gun control -legalize marijuana (treat marijuana very similar to alcohol and the income that they generate with the taxes they make will go towards social institutions for those in need) -institutional approach

question
-the mother is not making enough from work to support the family and the government is not giving anything either to help support. Even her being unemployed, she is still not receiving anything to support for family. Child tax benefits is barely helping her along. -increase unemployment insurance, the child tax benefit, and also benefits that she is not receiving because it is not just her who is in this situation -I would employ that from an institutional approach, the government needs to help families be able to meet their necessary standard of living (low income childcare) -offer skills and training programs to help her get a job -this approach will allow her to get on her feet

question
-she needs to get help mentally before she can worry about getting help for housing because if she continues to get evicted from houses it's, likely because of her mental state that she is in -if she gets help, she won't get evicted -institutions are available to her, but she runs away from them -the government should provide facilities where homeless people with or without a mental disability are able to go and talk about their struggles and communicate with others who are in their same situation -I would employ from the institutional approach that the government should want to help and offer her ways to find housing and be willing to offer her services where she can get help for her mental disability
