The fact that all learning institutions have departments of sports is enough proof that sports are of great importance to students. According to studies, engaging in sports usually improves one’s body and mind. Therefore, high school sports develop the students’ intellectual ability, thus enabling them to concentrate much better when in class (Chen, 2016). According to a recent survey conducted in the United States, approximately eight million students participate in high school sports (Mathews, 2011). This is equal to 55.5 percent of all high school students according to NFSH. Personally, I used to play basketball in high school, and this is because it was my favorite sports. Apart from analyzing the importance of high school sports, I also intend to address the benefits associated with participating in sports activities.
According to Chan (2016), high school stude
nts that participate in high school sports are unlikely to miss school compared to their colleagues that are not taking part in any sports. By not missing school, these students attend all classes; thus, they perform better in their academics. High school sports also enable students to work hard and acquire good grades. According to Hardy (2016), in some schools, students ought to attain certain grades in their academics before they can participate in sports. This principle prompts students to work hard in class to gain good grades and retain them.
Apart from improving grades, high school sports also teach students on the importance of teamwork and cooperation (Chan, 2016). Whenever the school team is playing against another, team members are always united by the fact that they are working towards one goal. While playing against their opponents, students also learn th
manner in which teamwork affects performance. In addition to teamwork, high school sports also result in the creation of social relationships (Hardy, 2016). Students taking part in similar sports activities are likely to forge healthy relationships, most of which last for a long time even after high school graduation. A healthy teen-parent relationship is likely to blossom as well, especially when the parents are fond of encouraging their children to work harder in sports.
While in high school, I played basketball, and this is because it was my favorite sports. Playing as a team enabled us to develop proper teamwork as well as leadership skills. The primary challenge that I had was balancing between sports and my academics. Just like other learning institutions, my former high school was also strict with academics. For example, one was not enrolled in any sports if he or she failed to meet certain grades. Additionally, one would also be dropped from participating in sports for consecutive poor performance in class. Therefore, to remain in the team, I strived to maintain good study habits. For good study habits, I developed self-discipline as well as good work habits. Although I developed these skills in a move to balance sports and academics, they have been influential to date. For example, through self-discipline, I can allocate and tackle my tasks in an appropriate manner.
High schools sports are of great importance to students. Through sports, students improve their grades. In some schools, students that perform poorly in class are usually dropped from sports. Such principles enable students to work hard in class in order to perform better and retain their good grades. Apart from good
grades, sports also allow students to learn the importance of teamwork. Additionally, they also foster healthy teen-parent relationships. In high school, I used to basketball since I was passionate about the game. Since my main challenge was balancing between sports and academics, I developed self-discipline, a skill which I have found to be quite influential to date.
