Read...a lot... at least 30 minutes a day if you don't read anything for school

Study word lists on this quizlet page of school spelling bee sets from years past...a lot of classroom spelling bees will draw their words from previous lists

Study this year's word list for schools.... this is the most basic form of study for school level

Get an edge by learning your Classical Languages and Foreign Languages... these will drastically help you spell well especially if you do Latin

Keep a running journal of the words you encounter everyday that you don't understand or don't know how to spell

If you really want to get ahead or if you have an ultra-competitive school, you have to study Spell-It Lists and Paideia lists--these are all available online... if you don't have a copy hmu

Don't be sad if you don't make it on your first year... I didn't win my first school bee until 7th grade but I made it to Nationals in 8th!

for real, if you really want to get ahead, go to Hexco.com, New Nat's, Verbomania, Blitz, all very expensive but worth it, words of wisdom is also really good... might be the reason I didn't make it past written test :/
