Describe ways to resolve any difficulties or dilemmas about the choice of food and drink There are many reasons why people do not choose to have a healthy diet; this can be linked to social class because poorer people may not be able to afford good quality food.

However it is possible to eat a healthy diet even on a budget. People who have a busy lifestyle eat a lot of convenience food which contain a lot Of salt and fat.

Other people just do not want to follow advice they are given and continue to eat unhealthy food as they say it tastes better. Example of a conflict or dilemma you may face at work Joan is a

diabetic; she has asked the care assistant who is new to the service for some chocolate cake. Sally, the new career, promptly goes and fetches the cake for her but another care assistant called Kelly sees Sally do this and promptly goes over and explains to Sally that Joan is not allowed this cake as she is diabetic and that she should always read the care plan before giving out food to service users.

Joan then gets very angry and upset and starts to shout at Kelly. Kelly remains calm and quietly explains to Jean that the chocolate cake contained sugar and hat it may make Jean ill if she consumes the cake due to her diabetes, Jean eventually understood that Kelly had only done this for her own good. Level and type of support an individual requires when eating and drinking Most people can feed themselves, but some will require help as they may eve a physical problem such as a broken arm or they may have a disability or illness such as Dementia. The level of support will be decided by the whole team involved in the care of the individual and written into the care plan.

The Level and type of support needed may be different even if 2 people have the same condition, for example, a Stroke as some may have movement in there arm and the other person may not. The code of practice says that you must treat each person as an individual and promote independence.

Always check with the individual the amount of support they require and do not take away their independence, but ensure hat they do have enough help otherwise they may not get enough to eat and drink.

It may be for some people that you just help them to cut up their food into manageable pieces, for other people that need assistance to eat their food it may make them feel degraded so always encourage them to do as much for themselves as possible. Remember that needs constantly change so all conditions need to be monitored and reported on as Some people may improve or they may deteriorate. Why do people need help with Eating and Drinking? Here are some examples of why people may need help with eating and drinking:

Effective hand-washing and use of protective clothing when handling

food and drink An effective hand washing technique involves three stages: Preparation Washing and rinsing Drying.

Preparation requires wetting hands under tepid running water before applying liquid soap or an antimicrobial preparation. The hand wash solution must come into contact with all of the surfaces of the hand. The hands must be rubbed together vigorously for a minimum of 10-15 seconds, paying particular attention to the tips of the fingers, the thumbs and the areas between the fingers.

Hands should be rinsed thoroughly before ring with good quality paper towels.

When decontaminating hands using an alcohol hand rub, hands should be free from dirt and organic material, the hand rub solution must come into contact with all surfaces Of the hand.
