Delaying the highly anticipated fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao is the matter of Mayweather insisting on Olympic-style blood testing for both boxers.
Mayweather has requested a random blood test to detect performance-enhancing drugs in his system - a personal requirement that he shows no sign of giving up. He has based his athletic career on the principle of avoiding harm and making money. Despite boasting an unbeaten record of 41 wins with 25 knockouts and being considered one of the greatest defensive boxers in history, Mayweather remains committed to staying drug-free.
While training at his Las Vegas gym, the boxer stated that money was not his main concern. Instead, he was determined to pursue a fight against Pacquiao and ensure they both undergo performance-enhancing drug tests. Mayweather challenged Pacquiao by questioning how a 25-year-old coul
...d suddenly become a great fighter and emphasized the importance of fighting at the highest level while on an equal playing field with his opponent.
The importance of testing was emphasized by Mayweather regarding Pacquiao's achievements. Mayweather expressed doubt by implying that Pacquiao may have used "power pellets" in earlier fights. As a result, Pacquiao brought a case against Mayweather for defamation and the latter is yet to provide a deposition at the federal court in Nevada. Despite the tense relationship between the two boxers and several failed attempts at organizing a fight with both of them, there are signs of progress. The parties seem to be approaching an agreement on drug-testing procedures. Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, has stated that Pacman is willing to comply with the World Anti-Doping Agency code and undergo necessary blood testing.
The issue involves a
unannounced blood sampling schedule, with Pacquiao requesting not to be tested within 14 days of a boxing match. However, USADA Head Travis Tygart believes that testing must be completely unannounced to effectively prevent doping. Bob Arum's concern is preventing the unreasonable cancellation of scheduled fights, and he proposes involving a state boxing commission in creating testing guidelines. If these efforts succeed, the highly anticipated super-fight may take place next year.
Assuming Mayweather and Pacquiao are victorious in their next bouts, Mayweather will face off against WBC Welterweight Champion Victor Ortiz on September 17th, and Pacquiao, now 32 years old, will take on Juan Manuel Marquez on November 12th.
