Introduction
answer
I'm going to be talking about 4 different essay types. The styles are Narrative, Descriptive, Cause/Effect, and Compare/Contrast. There are sample essays for each type as well. (switch slides)
question
Narrative writing tells a story with events that are in an orderly and logical sequence. The structure for the essay should be a introduction with a thesis statement, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Narratives can be in other types of essays as well. The essay should have a dominant pattern and the events in the story should flow, should not be monotone like, \"She played the game. She went to eat. She went back to her room.\"
answer
The purpose for the essay is to recount events in a chronological form and create a mood that the readers will be interested in. The essay needs specific details throughout the narrative to make them feel as if they are in the story. Flashbacks are a good want to provide the readers with background knowledge they may need to know. The conclusion should show the significance of the narrative and tell why it was important for the readers. (switch slides)
question
The Narrative story I chose was My Field of Dreams, by Tiffany Forte. The introduction of the story sets interesting contrasts by showing background knowledge of her wanting to be whatever she wanted to, in her case, become a baseball player. The thesis statement shows her memory of wanting to become a baseball player and informs the reader that she will be using that in her essay. The body follows chronological order well.
answer
There are also very descriptive words that help the reader be apart of the story. The conclusion restates her dreams well and shows how it still effects her today of not being able to become a baseball player. She uses the same tense throughout the essay which makes the essay smooth and understandable. The essay also stays with the topic of her dreams of being a baseball player, and she does not go onto any other tangents that would confuse the readers. (switch slides)
question
Descriptive writing is the next essay style. These essays tell about physical characteristics of a person, place, or thing. These essays depend on the five essays to create a vivid description. Description is also used in almost every other essay a student would write. There are two types of descriptive essays. Objective is an essay with no emotion and describes the object itself. Subjective is full of emotion throughout the essay.
answer
The writer should have great details throughout the essay and there should be any general descriptions. Using similes, metaphors, personification, and allusions will help the readers stay involved with the story. In these essays, the writer can use implied thesis statement which is when the writer describes the person, place, or thing. Or the writer can have an explicitly stated thesis which is when the writer uses descriptions to supports a particular point. They should also have a single dominant impression which is the mood of the essay. (switch slides)
question
The essay I chose was Rice. I liked the essay, because it had endless descriptions of her father and the rice all throughout the essay. The details were not general or bland either. I could not pinpoint a thesis statement well though. In the essay, she describes how important the rice is to her and her family. She lets the readers know everything about the rice so they are not confused at all. She also describes Bengali culture very thorough so the readers can know the background knowledge of the rice and her culture. (switch slides)
answer
The next essay style is Cause and Effect. A cause and effect essay analyzes how something and why something happens. They examine the causes and describe the effects or do both like we did in our last essay. The essays links events and situations together in a orderly structure that the reader can understand. They also note relationships between causes and effects. My definition of cause/effect essays in that they interpret why something happens or is happening and then they predict what the effects will be. To write this essay, the writer will focus on finding causes then focus on decribing the effects. (switch slides)
question
There are three ways a writer can write these essays. (Describe the slide) The essay I chose for cause/effect was The Irish Famine, 1845-1849. I chose this essay because it went into great detail of the causes of the Irish Famine. It shows that you use descriptive writing in these essays as well. The essay is clearly organized by each paragraph being a different cause and the last paragraph being the effects and solutions.
answer
It thoroughly examines all of the causes then states the effects. Throughout the paragraphs, it shows that all of the causes are interrelated. it also makes sure that all of the causes are completely explained and understood before moving on to the next cause. The conclusion does a very good job of explaining the significance and restates what was said in the essay. (switch slides)
question
the last essay style is compare/contrast. Comparison is when the write shows the similarities between objects or events. Contrast is when the writer shows the differences. Compare/Contrast is central to understanding the world and people do it on a daily basis. There must be a reason why the writer is comparing something. The events or objects being compared cannot be two complete different things like running and going to school.
answer
It shouldn't be obvious to the readers. The writer needs to pick key points that are going to be discussed. There are two different types, Subject by subject and point by point. Subject by subject is when there is pretty mush two different essays writing and then they are compared. Point by point is when the comparison goes in an orderly structure and is literally point by point. (switch slides)
question
The Essay I chose was brain versus Brawn. I liked this essay because the writer thoroughly explained the two different experiences he goes through. He made many good comparisons of these experiences. He had good descriptions that made the essay flow and was very interesting. The writer made certain that the points of the essay were significant. He also discussed the first experience completely before moving onto the the next one. (switch slides)
