Both Beowulf and Odysseus are initially presented as formidable figures. Beowulf is hailed as the mightiest man in Geatland, while Odysseus holds a similar reputation in Greece. Additionally, their respective quests involve significant undertakings - Beowulf seeks to vanquish Grendel, while Odysseus yearns for a triumphant homecoming and reunion with his wife, Penelope.

Both Beowulf and Odysseus express their intentions clearly. Upon arriving on the shore, Beowulf states his willingness to provide wholehearted help and counsel to Hrothgar. This reveals his ability to guide the wise ruler towards victory against their common enemy (Heaney 21). Similarly, after fighting in the Trojan War for ten years, Odysseus desires to return home and confront the suitors in order to reclaim his wife and land. He publicly declares in the mead-hall that he had a clear intention when he set sail and was fully committed to fulfilling the wishes of the people or perishing in the attempt.

The Anglo-Saxons valued strength greatly, as seen in Beowulf's impressive physical abilities. This is demonstrated when he forcefully rips off Grendel's arm (Heaney 57). In contrast, Greek society highly valued intelligence, which is why Odysseus was admired for his cleverness.
