I have grown up in Korea since I was born but I have never been to Korea traditional music concert in my life. It was my very first time to try to listen Korean music. I didn’t expect that much how much it would to be interesting for me. My first thought about the Korean music was “boring” because I know its beat and rhythm are really slower then other countries music. But my whole experience at the music concert totally made my bias different. Last time I went another Korean music concert a few months ago, I just went with my classmates but at this time I told all my friends out of my school to go with me because it was fun! When I walked into to the concert I was really shock that so many people came to join and I saw

many foreigner people in there. I took a sit with my friends and I got an information note for the music show. I did not have any knowledge about the Korean traditional music so I was kind of totally out of it. After my professor had an announcement shortly, the show began. I really liked the first show because one of my classmates performed there.

The first performance was the very highlight and last part of the Korean classical music is called “Samulnori, Buksori” was performed at the very last. The roots of amul nori come from ‘nog-ak’ which is known as famers music. A special ensemble called Samulnori was formed in the late 70s in Korea. Embedded depply in Korean heritage, samul nori depicts traditional Korean

culture, an agricultural society roote in the natural environment. Through this music, I would feel the kinda of divinity. It was performed with UCLA sutuends and professor with our traditional Korean costumes. Prof. Dong suck is now respected as a great performer, and teacher of samulnori at UCLA. Samulnori means four instruments or object and it is called the genre of traditional percussion music in Korean. Upbeat sound of Samulnori heightened the agitation of the concert. This samulnori sounded really fun. Everyone was thrown into a state of excitement. It was like Korean style indoor ensemble. It was very a great song to start the show begin.

The first part of the song was pretty slow but it goes to fast and it finally turned to slow again at the end of the music. Moreover, the other performance called “EEP CHUM” which is the two girls dancing and the Korean folk dance was performed. I say the dance was performance art representing women’s beauty. Their hand movements are really beautiful, elegant and delicate touch and it was very soft and feminine look. It is the Korean traditional dance that is very well-known. They were on beautiful Korean traditional dress called Han bock as well. The most part that I really liked at the concert was “18 hyun gayageum daihanoppegom” that Jisun Kim played Kauagum solo. That was my favorite part of the concert and a superb performance. She played the Kayagum with nimble fingers is really amazing. Actually I am taking gayagum class right now, and she is lessoning us gayakum so it was very fun show and I learned a lot of things when

she was playing.

The next part was Seugmoo by kim myo seon with standing bock. She danced very wild and i was really shock because she also danced with the bock. Another my favorite part was, I say, “Gyeonggi minyo”. This song was really well known and was song by people in area around gyeonggido and seoul. The speech of this area is very clear so there is no sad story song; usually happy song because this area people were pretty rich so they did sang sad songs. At the performance, the singers dressed very colorful Korean traditional dress it was bright and beautiful. There are different kinds of gyeongggi minyo, such as jungga, and sockga, Jungga is a song of common people when they sang for a joy. One of performing is the formal court music and other is for playing informal the folk tunes. I remember when I was little, I dressed Korean traditional dress and I sang Minyo. Thus it kind of reminds me of my past memories and I was deep in thought during the show. I remember I was focused entirely on the show and everyone was pretty quit. Furthermore, Cha su keyung, Kill seok geum played Haegum sango. Haegum sounded strikingly beautiful even it is a Korean instrument but it sounds like European instrument.

The Haegum was as plaintive as a melancholy memoires. Other part that I really enjoyed at the show was Hallyangmu by Lee woo ho. Before this dance, I thought there was only female dance performance, so it was pretty shock that male dances. He had full make up on his face and he

kind of danced like a girl. While he was dancing he kept smiling so that we could also smile during the performance. It was a dancing when normal people drank and enjoyed their moment. Moreover, one performed Salpuri chum which she dressed white Korean traditional dress. This dance is like an exorcism ceremonial dance. Traditionally in Korea, people have been had some kind of ceremony to get rid of bad things happened in years. Like Africa, some tribes dance to heal people from diseases and wish for the happiness and good things.

In Korea, dancers who are usually girls wear white Korean traditional dress and they hold white scarf or towel and dance with the song. This dance is the number one Korean traditional dance because dancer performs not only whishes for the future but also one’s feeling such as sadness and happiness. The next was gayageum sanjo by Chae soo jung, Jo hyun ji. Gayagum sanso is the solo song playing without any rule; the player plays what he or he wants to play. Usually it was started slow music and gets little faster after. That music was harmonious and pleasant to listen to. Also this music has charms to soothe a savage breast. Another show was Pasori by chae soo jung, Jo hyun ji. This is also Korean traditional folk song. Singer sings a song with a man who played bock. The song was related to the Korean historical episode.

Lastly, there were few more performs such as Hwasunmu by ucla Korean dance ensemble, Taac hapju nolie by kill seok geum, kim jin yeob and so on, Kyunggi nam do minyo by

jo hyunji, ju min ji, seo hwa jung, sim hun ji, kim ju hyeon, kim ji seung, and lee jo lee. I think Korean folk sons have sorrows abedded in them. Moereover our folk songs are imbued with the life breath of out ancestors, such as Arirang; it embodies the sorrow of our people. And finally, I did enjoy the whole time and I was so proud of being Korean and Korean music. I really, through this music concert, felt and appreciate the kind of divinity and soul that only Korean music can hold. These days, I also enjoy listening to Korean traditional music after I went to this concert. I think people all over the world would fall in love with Korean music and Korean traditional music as well if we performed world widely. I just felt it is unfortunate that young people take no interest in Korean traditional music. . If I could, I wish I would make Korean traditional music become popular. I think prof, Dongsuck just started to attempt to combine Korean classical music with modern people in USA.
