Despite efforts from both private organizations and government agencies, homelessness remains a persistent problem with no easy solution. The causes of homelessness vary, though economic hardship and lack of affordable housing are two major factors resulting in increased numbers of homeless individuals. Other contributing factors include mental illness or substance abuse disorders, domestic violence, job loss due to layoffs or business closures, inadequate access to social services such as food stamps or unemployment benefits, and health issues like physical disabilities or chronic illnesses.
