Popular Questions About Frankenstein

Why was Frankenstein book banned?
Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who creates a sapient creature, divided religious leaders for its references to God. The book caused great controversy in religious communities in the US and was banned in 1955 in South African Apartheid for being "objectionable and obscene."
What is the meaning behind Frankenstein?
In German, the name Frankenstein translates to “stronghold of freemen,” most likely referring to various castles and battlements around the country that also carry the name. Mary Shelley however, believed the name came to her in a vivid dream. In Shelley's novel, Dr. Victor Frankenstein never names his creation.
Was Frankenstein really bad?
As we reread Mary Shelley's Frankenstein at two hundred years, it is evident that Victor Frankenstein is both a mad scientist (fevered, obsessive) and a bad scientist (secretive, hubristic, irresponsible). He's also not a very nice person. He's a narcissist, a liar, and a bad “parent.” But he is not genuinely evil.
