I took a few days of classes and received my hunting education certification. Looking back, the actual class time is Just a blur of what not to do, but I was reminded of them when I took drivers education last December, with the what not to do teachings. I also remember being very nervous about the test, but having a great feeling when I learned I passed. That October, I remember being immensely excited to go on my first hunt.

The night before my dad and I left, I had a parent coacher conference and I remember getting some strange looks in the parking lot because we had a trailer loaded with tents, four wheelers, chairs, and a bunch of other stuff because we were going to leave the first thing

the next morning. The next day, we set off and I don't remember much of the drive. I Just can't remember anything other than it took a long time and I was really excited. The drive is about 4 hours normally, but towing a trailer, it takes a bit longer.

We got to the site where we set up our base camp, set up, and spent the night alone, since no one else was going to be there until the next morning. The next morning, a few people showed up, including my dad's friend, Chris Catchword and business partner TTY. We finished the set up of the camp and made plans for the next day, Saturday, my first opening day. That night my dad, me, and Catchword packed up and hiked a few miles into the bush to make it easier to hun

the next day, not having to hike a few miles at 4 in the morning. We set up and went to bed early.

I could hardly sleep. The whole night is kind of a blur, but the next morning around 5:00, my dad woke me up and we all set out into the darkness. Hiking up to the area where we thought the elk would be, we awe a huge, 8 point bull elk, but it was before shooting light and we had to let him run off. After this, my dad and I found a small meadow in and sat down to wait for shooting light. As the meadow filled with light, we heard tons of shots all around, but mostly down the hill below us, we saw nothing, so after an hour or so, we moved on.

After a while trekking through some thick brush, we found a clearing. The cycle of hiking, waiting, and seeing nothing repeated itself a few times. Then, in the closing minutes of daylight, we came across Catchword, who had downed a cow elk an hour before. We all headed back to the spike camp. Catchword headed back to the main camp, and my dad and me felt some disappointment watching him leave, but this had happened before and my dad had gotten an elk, so we had hope. We made these horrible MR. like things for dinner and went to bed, feeling optimistic for the coming day.

The second day didn't start well. I woke up really early and I was absolutely freezing. It had dropped down to the negatives the night before and we had a

summer tent without cold weather sleeping bags. My dad woke up a little later and we got up. We headed into the dark agreeing that we would head back to the main amp if we didn't get anything that day. We found a different meadow from the first day, and waited for shooting light. After hearing shots from below us after shooting light, we gained hope as we did the first day.

We saw nothing. We hiked to a few other meadows and clearings through out the day and saw nothing. Then, the last time we were going to head to another spot, I saw it. There was a small valley we were on one side of and across it, maybe 150 yards, I saw the elk. I dropped to one knee, and fired two shot from my bolt action 30-06 rifle. The elk dropped. I heard my dad yell "What are you doing?!? Clearly he hadn't seen it. I told him I had dropped an elk and he didn't believe me. We walked over to the elk, and I had in fact gotten it.

My dad congratulated me and we hugged. He told me he was proud of me and couldn't believe he hadn't seen it. I'll spare you the details, but we then quartered and removed the sweet meats. We headed down the spike camp, packed up, and went back to base camp. That night when everyone had returned, I recalled the tale and got more congratulations from the guys we hunt with. The rest of the trip is lost to history, but I will never forget the days leading up to and

moment of my first ever elk.
